A suspected Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) terrorist was killed in retaliatory firing by police on January 9 afternoon, following the latter intercepting the taxi the terrorist was travelling in, at Lumshai, Shillong. The police later recovered a Chinese grenade, a 9mm pistol, 15 rounds of ammunition, Rs 1,420, in cash and a mobile phone. Cellular operators have been asked to provide information on calls made and received by the slain terrorist. Subsequent unconfirmed reports said police arrested two more HNLC terrorists, who were injured in the same incident, from a taxi stand in Shillong.

According to a report, two persons were killed in an attack, allegedly by a group of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) terrorists, on May 21 at Samthaibari, approximately 10 km away from Bongaigaon town. The terrorists, camouflaged in army fatigues, stormed into a local petrol pump and resorted to indiscriminate firing thereafter. A driver and cleaner of one of the trucks passing by were killed in the firing. The terrorists also looted Rs 1 lakh in cash before they managed to escape. The report, quoting Bongaigaon district police chief A Bargohain, further said the terrorists possibly wanted to target the convoy of the Minister of State for Home Pradyut Bordoloi. The district police chief was also quoted as saying that the terrorists were misinformed that the convoy of the Minister would pass through Samthaibari Service Station, the place of the incident. The police seized a Chinese made revolver from the spot. Four suspects were reportedly arrested later in connection with the incident. A search operation was subsequently launched to nab the terrorists. No further information was available when reports last came in.

In a major strike, armed terrorists in Manipur reportedly killed 11 Assam Rifles personnel on May 27, in an encounter and later escaped to the adjoining thick jungles and hill areas. Media reports quoting official sources said unidentified terrorists attacked an Assam Rifles convoy from both sides of a hilly road when the latter reached Tongsong near Sangsad village on Imphal-Ukhrul Road. A vehicle in the convoy was totally destroyed when the terrorists lobbed grenades at it. The soldiers, who included an officer, died on the spot. Sources Reports also said the terrorists looted five AK 47 rifles. A large posse of security force led by a senior official were reportedly rushed to the spot and have launched a massive combing operation to track down the fleeing terrorists.

Two Kuki terrorists and a civilian were killed in an encounter with security forces on a door-to-door search operations following a tip-off about the presence of terrorists at Itham Moirangpurel Seijang village, about 20 km north east of Yairipok police station in Manipur, on June 16 morning. According to media reports, the joint team led by the State police and the Assam Rifles were fired upon by terrorists. Following a fierce encounter three persons were reportedly killed while several suspected terrorists managed to escape. Though security reinforcements were rushed to the area from both Yairipok and Imphal to arrest the escaped terrorists, no progress has been reported. While the security forces claim that all the three killed were terrorists, family members of one of the dead claimed he was innocent and had gone to the house of his friend to watch television. Several arms and ammunition, including an SLR, an AK rifle, 25 electronic detonators and incriminating documents were reportedly seized from the encounter site.

Media repots said the explosion occurred when the vehicle was crossing the Kharigaon-Balazam river-bridge, Bishmuri police station limits, Kokrajhar district of Assam. Following this, the terrorists also opened indiscriminate gunfire on the vehicle. However, no one was hurt in the attack. But, the attack caused severe damage to the vehicle and the bridge. Even as the terrorists managed to escape, SFs seized two hurricane bombs, 250m of fuse wire and a copy of an Assamese daily, reports said. Investigations were on when reports last came in.

Using metal detectors and sniffer dogs, the explosives were recovered by SFs during a search operation. They were subsequently destroyed by the bomb disposal squad of the Army.
