SFs arrested an Anti-Talks Faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-ATF) militant, identified as Hemakanta Changmai, from Lekhapani in Tinsukia District on January 2. An AK-81 rifle, 162 rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades and INR 43,750 in cash were recovered from him. The arrested militant revealed that ULFA-ATF ‘Vice Chairman’ Paresh Baruah was in the Taka-based camp of the group in Myanmar from January to October last year where at least 250 cadres of the outfit are currently undergoing training.

He confessed that working as an OWG of PLA since 2009. Police further revealed that the device was handed over to him by one Robertson of the PLA on January 14 for planting at various places to disrupt the Republic Day 2012 celebration as well as the conduct of 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly on January 28. Sub-divisional Police officer Modhunimai said they first arrested a militant identified as Seram Sanatomba and on his information the other four were arrested. Two hand-grenades were also seized from them. Modhunimai said that they were involved in hurling a bomb at the house of a woman candidate, W. Shyama, and sent an extortion notice to Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) Minister N. Biren. They also tried to corner lucrative contract works in the IFC department and get big loans from the District Industrial Centre. Police teams were conducting a search operation of Arengdo village, near Kharkutta at 6:30am when they spotted the GNLA camp outside the village. Before the Police could move in, the GNLA militants, in a group of six to eight, fired heavily on the teams and the encounter lasted for 30 long minutes. The militants escaped leaving behind the powerful detonators, a pistol and a large number of demand notes of the GNLA.

Police arrested a GNLA cadre identified as Julius N Marak from the Goreng coal mine in Shallang in West Khasi Hills District. A crude bomb was recovered from his possession. Police informed that a group of nine GNLA cadres led by Savio Marak ‘area commander’ of Khasi Hills entered the coal-rich area of Shallang with an aim to abduct some coal traders of the area. However, the GNLA cadres were spotted by the Police who were present in the area. The Police team, however, did not fire on the militants as several coal labourers were working in the coal mine. While the ‘home secretary’ was arrested from Thenga Loubuk at Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, his wife identified as Memton alias Ing, was arrested later from an unspecified location. Two Chinese hand grenades, one .32 pistol, two magazines, two live rounds, 80 extortion notes of URF and a personal computer set were recovered from Memton. Acting on the disclosure of the couple, four other cadres of URF were also arrested. It was revealed that Nanao joined UNLF in 2008 and got basic military training in Myanmar and worked under the command of one Wanglen. Security Forces (SFs) recovered an unsophisticated detonator, a bomb and 10 live cartages of Single Barrel Gun (SBL) from the residence of one Hiring Zemi at New Kunjung locality of Haflong town in Dima Hasao District on March 11. Hiring, a teacher by profession, was also said to be involved in kidnapping of Shyamol Paul, a town-based businessperson on March 2 by unidentified militant groups. As per Police report, the recovery suggests that, a non Dimasa militant formation with assistance of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Issak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) was trying to consolidate position among tribal population of the District.

SFs in the last 48 hours arrested two top Anti-Talks Faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-ATF) militants, Hanja Boro and Willbi Rabha, in Shialmari village under Serfanguri area in Kokrajhar District, reports The Sentinel. In addition, SFs arrested Mihir Narzary alias Mwjib, ‘section commander’ of the NDFB-ATF (Sonitpur District) and Sunil Daimary from Karigaon in the same District. SFs recovered three automatic pistols, ammunition and two grenades from the arrested militants. The report added that all the arrested militants were involved in extorting money from businesspersons.

A cadre of SK Thadou faction of United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA-SK Thadou), identified as Lammingou Singson, was also arrested by the SFs on the same day from Leisabithol, Jiribam. A country-made pistol along with seven live rounds was recovered from him. Separately, the UTLA has announced to impose an “indefinite bandh” (shut down strike) along the National Highway 53 (Imphal-Jiribam road) from 6 am of March 17 over the arrest of Lammimgou, reports Kanglaonline. In October 2011, altogether 45 cadres of UTLA laid down arms before Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh at the 1st Manipur Rifles Banquet Hall. The outfit is yet to enter the SoO agreement with the Government.
