On January 14, a United Liberation Force of Asom (ULFA) terrorist was killed in an encounter with security force personnel in Patkijuli village, under Khairani police post-limits, Assam. Quoting Army sources, media reports added that, on getting specific information that three or four ULFA terrorists were moving along the India–Bhutan border to collect ration, medicine and winter clothing for colleagues in camps in Bhutan, the Army laid an ambush. In the ensuing encounter, an ULFA cadre was killed, while the others managed to escape. An AK 56 rifle, a magazine and 28 live rounds of ammunitions were recovered from the site of the encounter.

According to media reports, on a tip off, the police laid seize to a PLA hideout at Nandeibam Uku, under Singjamei police station in Imphal East district, and asked the terrorists to surrender. However, the terrorists opened fire, possibly in a bid to flee. The terrorists, including the ‘PLA central committee chief’ Khomdram Lalaba alias Jayentakumar alias Jim Kelly alias JK, were killed in the retaliatory firing by the police. Reports added that Khomdram Lalaba had been granted bail after he was arrested in the early 1990s.

According to police sources, the slain terrorists had come from their Bhutan camp reportedly with an intention to surrender. However, another group of four NDFB terrorists clashed with them at Nonaikhas area, under Paneri police station limits. Two NDFB terrorists were killed in the ensuing gunfight. It was not immediately clear if both the slain terrorists were those who wanted to surrender. An 11-year-old boy also sustained injuries during the crossfire. On specific information, a security force (SF) search party cordoned a hideout where the terrorists had held captive a businessman from Wabagai. However, the terrorists present inside opened indiscriminate fire killing a SF personnel. The SFs retaliated by firing back in which a terrorist was killed. The abducted businessman was rescued following the operation. While an AK-47 rifle was recovered from the slain terrorist, subsequent search of the hideout led to the recovery of three AK-47 magazines, two 12 bore single barrel guns, two magazines of Self Loading Rifles (SLR), 211 rounds of assorted ammunition, three hand grenades, 500 grams of explosive material and an Light Machine Gun (LMG) magazine box, among other things. Body of another person believed to be owner of the house where the terrorists were hiding was also recovered from the incident site. About eight to nine KYKL terrorists reportedly escaped under the cover of fire.
