Left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG), set a Kanker-bound Madhya Pradesh Roadways bus afire near Bijapur of Bastar division, on June 23. Inspector General of Police, Bastar, S.K. Paswan, told the media that approximately 25 Naxalites in uniform stopped the bus near Bherampur on National Highway 16 and asked the bus driver and passengers to disembark before setting the bus on fire. Reports said, the incident, which happened on the eve of a Bastar bandh (general strike) organised by the PWG on June 25, to avenge the killing of Naxal ‘commander’ Sukhdev in an encounter earlier in June, was intended as a message to the Chhattisgarh government. Sources said the PWG has made known its plans to step up violence in Bastar areas bordering Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, and Maharashatra. In view of the bandh, security arrangements have been beefed up in Bastar and a general alert has been sounded in all Naxal-affected areas.

The shops are located just 500m away from the Kanchirankuda Special Task Force (STF) camp. The damage caused was an estimated SLR three hundred and fifty thousand, reports claimed. One of the victims of the arson accused the STF of having a role in the incident. He said, "My daughter has joined the [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam] LTTE. Since then Kanchirankuda STF personnel (have) been monitoring my activities with suspicion… STF personnel told me to make a complaint to the SLMM [Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission] stating that the LTTE had forcibly conscripted my daughter. I told them that my daughter joined the LTTE voluntarily. From then onwards STF personnel when buying goods from my shop sometimes do not pay for the goods." Local Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Member of Parliament Chandra Nehru reportedly visited the site and made representations to the SLMM and police.
