Unidentified groups set on fire communication towers of Ncell, a private sector telecom company, at different parts of the country, reports Kathmandu Post. In Dhading District of Province No. 3, an Ncell tower was torched on January 1. According to Police, radio set, generator and other equipment were destroyed in the arson. Some leaflets, stating that Ncell has swindled Nepali people and evaded billions of tax, were also found in the incident site.

According to Police, about 20 to 25 Maoists attacked a private construction company's camp office involved in bridge construction over Karigara river situated between Keredari and Piparwar Police Station limits of the District and set on fire six vehicles used for construction work. According to Police sources, Maoists had sought levy of INR 80 million from the construction company. The denial of levy is said to be the reason of the attack.

The cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) attacked a construction company site, beat up its workers set and ablaze vehicles near Baksauti village under Govindpur Police Station limits in Nawada District of Bihar on January 6, reports Devdiscourse. As per the report, around 30 to 40 armed cadres of CPI-Maoist stormed a construction site, thrashed 17 workers and set a JCB machine and a pickup van on fire. The Station House Officer (SHO), Nagendra Prasad said the Maoists took all the workers towards a river, on which a bridge is being constructed, tied them with ropes and beat them up. Before leaving the spot, the Maoists also took away mobile phones and money from the workers. The Maoists fired two rounds in the air before moving towards a nearby hillock.

The cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) set ablaze vehicles engaged in road construction at Manpur village under Aundhi Police Station limits in Rajnandgaon District of Chhattisgarh on January 7, reports Pioneer. According to the report, two Hyva vehicles that were engaged in road construction between Sarkheda and Gutampur under the said Police Station were set on fire by the Maoists. A local Police Officer said, “The vehicles belonging to Landmark Constructions were parked at the construction site about 10 kilometers from Police Station. The driver and cleaners who were in the vehicles were thrashed by the Maoists and told to run away.” He also said that the Maoists had left behind posters and banners in the area. On receiving the news of the incident, a Police team rushed to the spot who ascertained that the incident happened on the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border and Jatgaon/Korchi Dalam (armed squad) of the CPI-Maoist could be behind the incident.

APolice Official said, "Some suspected Maoists reached the spot and set ablaze six mini trucks parked along the river before fleeing from the spot. There were some reports of dispute among locals over allocation of sand excavation work. They also stuck handwritten posters in the name of Kabani Dalam (armed squad) of ‘Nadugani Area Committee’ (NAC) of CPI-Maoist, on the walls of the resort. Alleging sexual exploitation of Adivasi women in the region, the posters read, “It’s a revenge attack for sexually exploiting Adivasi women last season, the attack is against portraying Adivasis as showpiece before tourists. All resort owners who pose a threat to the peaceful existence of Adivasis will be forcibly evicted.”

A Police Official said Maoists stormed a road construction site set on fire two trucks, a water tanker and a concrete mixer machine belonging to a private firm. “The work underway is part of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Despite the contractor being warned not to carry out work until adequate security is in place, he continued construction activities. His vehicles were seized recently for ignoring security warnings applicable to conflict-ridden areas,” the Official said adding that efforts are on to apprehend the Maoists.

A group of over 60 cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) attacked a construction site, assaulted two of its workers and set ablaze two JCB machines, a roller and a mixture machine engaged in road construction work near Gumma village under Kalyansinghpur Block (administrative unit) in Rayagada District of Odisha on January 22, reports The Pioneer. As per the report, the Rural Development Department has taken up a road construction project worth INR 100 million from Naringtoli village to Gumma village in the District. After the attack, the Maoists left posters, bearing the name of the ‘Rayagada Area Committee’ (RAC) of CPI-Maoist. The posters alleged that the road is being constructed to facilitate the entry of Vedanta Mining Company into the Niyamagiri forests in the State and forcibly suppress the movement of tribals against bauxite mining. It also read that those people would be punished in the ‘Jan Adalats’ (People’s court, hold by CPI-Maoists) if they supported handing over Niyamagiri to the Vedanta Company.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Anjani Anjan, Manjhi was a Munshi (Clerk) of a contractor who is engaged in constructing a road from Pindra to Tuti Jharna village under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). As per the sources, the Maoists barged into the said village and set ablaze a JCB machine, one tractor and one motorcycle engaged in road construction work near the contractor’s camp and assaulted labourers. After this, they dragged Manjhi out of the camp and shot him dead. Before fleeing, the Maoists left posters stating their disapproval over the construction of the road and dictated the contraction firm to stop the work. The posters also alleged that the State Government was constructing the road to loot minerals from the area.

We hope that reinforcements are sent soon. So far, no support has been provided to the forces due to bad weather,” said Abdullah Nazari, a provincial council member in Badakhshan. Mondal was executing two road projects under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) - one from Mundaguda to Siripaka and the other from Ganiaguda to Dangariaguda under Malkangiri Rural Department Division-I.Following threats from Maoists to stop the road works, Mondal had gone to the construction site to bring back the machines engaged in the PMGSY projects. However, a group of 10-15 armed rebels arrived at the construction site and hacked him to death for defying their order. After killing Mondal, the Maoists set afire the contractor’s vehicles including a MUV (Multi Utility Vehicle), a JCB machine, a roller and machines engaged in road construction work. They also left behind a handwritten poster near the contractor’s body claiming responsibility for the murder.
