A group of Maoists shot dead a forest official, identified as Rabindranath Patra, and set ablaze his beat-house and motorcycle at Sarguda village in the Mayurbhanj district on May 8, according to Press Trust of India. Mayurbhanj District Collector, Suresh Vashisth, told The Telegraph that around 10 armed Maoists stormed into the Sarguda forest beat-house in Rairangpur forest division and dragged Rabindranath Patra, out of his house. "Then they set the beat-house on fire and took Patra around half-a-km away before putting a bullet through his head," said Vashisth. Before leaving, the Maoists also put up posters on the trees demanding the "end of oppression" by forest officials, he added. The Maoists, three of whom were women, were suspected to have crossed over from the neighbouring Jharkhand and went back to the neighbouring State after the incident, police said. Forest officials said Patra reached the area on May 7 in connection with the elephant census being undertaken and had attended a wedding feast at a nearby area on May 8-night.

Ten people were killed and over 50 others injured in a powerful bomb blast at the Mecca Masjid (Mecca mosque) near Charminar in Hyderabad, capital of Andhra Pradesh, on May 18, according to The Hindu. Over 10,000 people were offering prayers at the 400-year-old mosque at 1.15 p.m. when the bomb exploded. Police sources said that the explosive device, in which RDX was used, was triggered with a cellular phone and was hidden underneath a thick marble platform. Two more improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were recovered from the site and later defused by the police. Police also found a SIM card from a mobile phone attached to an IED. Four more people were killed subsequently in police firing as mobs clashed with the police. Sporadic incidents of arson and attacks continued in many areas till late in the night. No organisation has, so far, claimed responsibility for the attack, even though police suspect the involvement of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) and Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Balwinder Singh, Police Commissioner of Hyderabad, told CNN-IBN, "It was a terrorist attack. Jehadi hand is not ruled out behind the attack. Investigations are on and the police have managed to lay their hands on some clues."
