the Maoists set ablaze three mobile communication towers in Baragada area of Ganjam District on the first day of the two-day bandh (shut down strike) called by the Maoists in the State from January 4, reports The Hindu. According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Binay Kamila, the Maoists set ablaze two mobile communication towers at Goudagotha village and another at Barada village, located near Ganjam-Gajapati-Kandhamal border where Maoists are trying to increase their hold. The Maoists also pasted posters asking people to make the bandh a success and to protest anti-Maoist operations. The Maoists also threatened the company officials and staff of the Vedanta Alumina Refinery to immediately give up their jobs and leave the area, adds The Pioneer.

Suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres abducted three labourers of a private construction company after setting ablaze five earthmoving machines at two places in Sitamarhi District on January 10, reports The Telegraph. The Police said about 25 armed cadres raided the construction site of Rajendra Singh and Brothers Construction (Private) Ltd Company at Maniari on Sitamarhi-Riga Road around 10.30pm [local time] and held the labourers captive. The Maoists also fired in the air and hurled bombs to terrorise the residents, who could not muster courage to challenge them. The Maoists later escaped from the area abducting three labourers. They also left pamphlets demanding money from the owner of the company. The abducted labourers were identified as Ram Lal Mahto, a resident of Purnahiya in Sheohar District, Harendra Singh of Musahari in Muzaffarpur District and Shishupal Yadav of Runnisaidpur in Sitamarhi District.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres attacked an excavation site owned by Panem Coal Mines Limited at Katahaldih in Amrapara in Pakur District and killed a security guard on January 10, reports The Telegraph. According to reports, over two dozen Maoists armed with sophisticated firearms and traditional weapons stormed the coal excavation site around 4pm (local time), firing indiscriminately on security guards posted there. One of the guards, Pramod Yadav, was killed in the firing while at least four others sustained bullet injuries. Before leaving, the Maoists set ablaze an earthmover, though company sources said three vehicles had been burnt. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vinay Kumar Pandey confirmed Yadav’s death, but refused to comment on the condition of the others. “So far, we have been told that one guard was killed in the firing, but we have no information about the injured,” the DIG said, adding that Pakur Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel had rushed to the spot with forces.

The local Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on January 13 set ablaze over a dozen computers, television sets, cellular phones and several cassettes in the Wana bazaar of South Waziristan Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Ares (FATA), reports The News. The TTP led by Maulvi Nazeer said they had already banned using television and computers for watching movies and music and carrying cellular phones with cameras. They said some people were still violating the ban. The TTP militants had seized over a dozen TV sets and computers and mobile phones and several cassettes, reportedly of music, from local people and these were burnt in the main bazaar of Wana.

Around 100 armed cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) blew up one mobile tower in Sanda village under the Kutumba Police Station in Aurangabad District late on January 17, reports The Times of India. The Maoists also assaulted Radhe Singh, the guard, before leaving the spot. The Maoists then moved to Sonarkhap village, around 1.5 kilometres from Sanda village, and set ablaze another mobile tower. Later, they left the palce shouting anti-government slogans. The incidents happened during the 24-hour bandh (shutdown strike) call given by the Maoists in protest against the killing of their cadres in an encounter on January 2 with the Police in Rohtas District, sources said.

According to sources, the Maoists set ablaze and damaged two road rollers, one tipper, one excavator and a motorcycle. Earlier in the night, they had blocked several roads connecting Narayanpatna block with the outside world. The roads had not been cleared till evening. The Narayanpatna-Laxmipur road was blocked at several places by the Maoists by felling trees and digging up the road. The Narayanpatna-Bandhugaon-Parvatipuram road was blocked near Bagam square. The Narayanpatna-Podapadar road was blocked near Podapadar. The security forces, fearing an ambush, are treading warily. However, no one was injured in the incident as the inhabitants of the village have been staying in the Madlipara Lower Primary School refugee camp under the Dhaligaon Police Station in Chirang District since July 24. Earlier, miscreants had set ablaze four houses at Dhaligaon on August 1 in the same District. State Home Department, according to a July 30 report, said that 5,000 houses were set ablaze in 244 villages during the Bodo-Muslim clashes. The clashes started when founder president of All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) , Mohibul Islam and former leader of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), Abdul Siddique Sheikh were seriously injured in the attack on July 19. In a retaliatory attack, a mob of people at Joypur under Kokrajhar Police Station lynched to death four former militants of disbanded Bodoland Liberation Tiger (BLT) - Pradip Bodo (32), Jonson Bodo (36), Nip Goyari (25) and Jamin Goyari (24) in the night of July 20. "The Bodo miscreants indiscriminately fired in Ranibuli village under Kokrajhar Police Station late on Monday night killing three persons and seriously injuring two others," Assam Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) L R Bishnoi said. Bishnoi said that the three killed belong to Lakhiganj of bordering Dhubri District. Following the incident, a curfew has been clamped again in Kokrajhar District while indefinite curfew continues in the neighbouring Chirang District where there are fresh reports of arson. Some houses were burnt down there but the timely action of Police prevented any major violence, Bishnoi added. One person has been arrested in this connection from Chirang. The army continued their flag march in the morning of August 7 (today) in the three Districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri, hit by clashes between Bodo tribals and the minority community, which started on July 20.

Suspected PLFI rebels tried to set ablaze a truck in Lalgutuwa locality in the evening. Though the rebels set the truck on fire, Police doused it and saved the truck from major damages. "It is being investigated whether PLFI rebels played a role or it was the handiwork of some anti-social elements," said rural Superintendent of Police (SP), A V Minz. No effect of the bandh was witnessed in urban Ranchi. The State Government has acquired 227 acres of land in Nagri to construct permanent campuses of IIM Ranchi, National Law University and other educational institutions. Over 500 households in the village have been opposing the land acquisition since April, 2012.
