Unidentified persons are reported to have set ablaze another school in the Diamer district of Gilgit in the Northern Areas of Pakistan on February 20, raising the number of damaged schools to nine. According to Daily Times, they were either set ablaze or bombed since February 16. In the latest incident, a community girls’ school was burnt down in the Thore valley of Diamer, 160 kilometers south of Gilgit causing no injuries, said police official Zahir Khan. Police is guarding 200 community schools being run under the Social Action Programme and funded by the World Bank to prevent further incidents, added Khan. Meanwhile, an unnamed official of the Northern Areas Home Department said that these incidents were occurring due to a decline in enrolment in seminaries and an increase in government schools. He said that the area was under the influence of Islamist extremists who felt threatened about losing their support base in the district.

At least 42 persons are reported to have died and more than 150 sustained injuries when a procession of the Shia sect was attacked by rival Sunni extremists at Liaquat Bazaar in Quetta, capital of Baluchistan, on March 2, observed as Youm-i-Ashur, the 10th day of Muharram (Annual Shia festival commemorating martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad). The British Broadcasting Service reported that homes, businesses and a mosque used by Sunni Muslims were set ablaze by rioters following the attack. Eyewitnesses said that as the Shia procession was passing through a busy shopping area in Quetta a grenade was thrown, followed by firing from automatic guns. "I was present near the procession when we first heard an explosion and then some people fired shots," said Quetta Mayor Abdul Rahim Kakar. At least five police personnel are amongst those reported dead. While the exact number of fatalities was unclear till last reports came in, some estimates put the figures higher and doctors in Quetta were quoted as saying in the media that the death toll could increase. No group has claimed responsibility for the massacre thus far.
