On February 10, the Maoists reportedly exploded a bomb at the Bishal Bazar shopping complex in central Kathmandu. The blast caused damages to the statue of King Mahendra and no casualties were reported. Also, in an indication of escalation in arson and vandalism prior to the 9th anniversary of the Maoists’ ‘People’s War’ on February 13, the insurgents have carried out a series of explosions in several places across the country. In two bomb blasts on February 9, one civilian was seriously injured in the Bardia district and another bomb exploded at the Accounts and Control Office in Kalaiya with no casualties reported.

Reports from the Gilgit area of Northern Areas in Pakistan have indicated that suspected Islamist radicals opposed to female education attempted to blow up a girl’s school in the remote town of Chilas on February 18. Local police officer Zaheer Khan was quoted as saying in The Nation that unidentified men planted a low intensity explosive device in the three-room school building which exploded without causing any fatalities. It was the fifth such incident in less than a week in which schools had been targeted. Khan also said that non-governmental organisations had set up several schools in the Diamir district which, according to him, had upset Islamist extremists in the region. He added that at least 16 extremists had been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigations.

Unidentified persons are reported to have set ablaze another school in the Diamer district of Gilgit in the Northern Areas of Pakistan on February 20, raising the number of damaged schools to nine. According to Daily Times, they were either set ablaze or bombed since February 16. In the latest incident, a community girls’ school was burnt down in the Thore valley of Diamer, 160 kilometers south of Gilgit causing no injuries, said police official Zahir Khan. Police is guarding 200 community schools being run under the Social Action Programme and funded by the World Bank to prevent further incidents, added Khan. Meanwhile, an unnamed official of the Northern Areas Home Department said that these incidents were occurring due to a decline in enrolment in seminaries and an increase in government schools. He said that the area was under the influence of Islamist extremists who felt threatened about losing their support base in the district.

One Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and two drivers on election duty were reportedly killed as terrorists attacked polling booths in at least five places during polling for the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) seat on April 26. Assam Tribune reported that unidentified terrorists opened fire targeting CRPF personnel at a polling station in Wangu Sabal and Ningthoukhong areas, bordering interior Thoubal and Bishnupur districts. They also detonated bombs before opening fire at the CRPF personnel at Wangu Sabal and in the subsequent encounter, one CRPF personnel and two civilian drivers were killed. In another incident at Ningthoukhong Mayai Leikai polling station in Bishnupur district, one CRPF personnel was wounded. Further, at Kumbi Junction High School polling station in the same district, terrorists reportedly fired for over half an hour forcing suspension of polling. On December 29, about 150-armed left-wing extremists (also known as Naxalites) of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead four persons, including a woman, and destroyed two houses using dynamite at Mauri village in the Patna district of Bihar. One of the deceased, Harendra Sharma, was reportedly a State homeguard personnel. The incident was believed to be in retaliation to the recent killing of a Naxalite, Siyaram Manjhi.
