The disturbance also spread to Bokajan & Hamren subdivision where mobs set ablaze three buildings, including two inspection bungalows, a local education department office and a timber-laden truck respectively. A Police source said more Security Forces had reached the hill district today to boost strength of the existing eight companies of Army and Central Armed Police Forces. Meanwhile, former ‘publicity secretary’ of the now-disbanded United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), Wajuru Mukarang, said that people were angry because the Centre had lied to them, saying no new state was possible without putting in place a States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) first, reports The Telegraph. UPDS leader, Wajuru Mukarang further said, “We were never satisfied; that was not what we wanted. We were made to sign the memorandum of settlement.” Mukarang warned that if the Government could betray them, they could go back to militancy too. Also, Hill State Democratic Party (HSDP), which is demanding a State comprising Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao District, has called a 100-hour Bandh (strike) from August 5.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Imphal West, K Jayenta said “We don’t think today’s explosion was a target on migrant workers. It could be connected with monetary demanded slapped by underground organizations on the business community in Dharamsala area, “There have been reports of hefty demands served on the traders in the area and the blast could be a warning to them to cough up the money soon, the SP said and added that the police, nevertheless, have begun a probe to ascertain the motive behind the blast.“With the militants relying on explosive devices we have also changed our operational strategy to check their subversive activities in the city area in view of the rising number of shoppers for the upcoming festivals including Kut, Ningol Chak-kouba and Diwali etc,” the SP said.

One of the most daring and audacious attacks by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants, it carried out three violent attacks in different incidents on December 11. The first attack by the GNLA militant group was targeted at Tisha Auto Agency petrol station in Chasingre on the outskirts of Tura. Four militants brandishing AK rifles walked up to the gas station rounded up the employees and opened fire injuring pump operators, Nobu Hajong and Bishu Roy. In the second incident, the same group of militants fled towards the foothills of Tura peak and on their way attacked a relay station of the Meghalaya Police Radio Organization located at Darichekgre. The tower was blown up on the eve of the Maoist-sponsored bandh (shut down strike) to register protest against the ongoing ‘Operation Greenhunt’. The bandh virtually crippled life in Dumaria, Imamganj, Banke Bazar, Raushanganj, Mohanpur and Gurua Police Station areas of Gaya District and Nabinagar, Amba, Deo and Madanpur areas of neighbouring Aurangabad District. The impact of the bandh under Gurua Police Station area of Gaya has caused concern in administrative circles as, in recent times, Maoist activity in the Gurua area was much less and earlier bandh calls given by the Maoists were largely ignored by the villagers. It is being seen as resurgence of Maoists in the area.
