The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres attacked an excavation site owned by Panem Coal Mines Limited at Katahaldih in Amrapara in Pakur District and killed a security guard on January 10, reports The Telegraph. According to reports, over two dozen Maoists armed with sophisticated firearms and traditional weapons stormed the coal excavation site around 4pm (local time), firing indiscriminately on security guards posted there. One of the guards, Pramod Yadav, was killed in the firing while at least four others sustained bullet injuries. Before leaving, the Maoists set ablaze an earthmover, though company sources said three vehicles had been burnt. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vinay Kumar Pandey confirmed Yadav’s death, but refused to comment on the condition of the others. “So far, we have been told that one guard was killed in the firing, but we have no information about the injured,” the DIG said, adding that Pakur Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel had rushed to the spot with forces.

Violence erupted after Police arrested a “mentally retarded” man said to have burnt pages of the holy book in Kuchlak, about 16 kilometres (10 miles) north of Quetta, senior administration official Qambar Dashti told AFP. “Angry protesters, mostly Afghan refugees, torched several vehicles and pelted police with stones,” Dashti said. They burnt tires and blocked the Quetta-Chaman highway. “Chanting the man should be killed for blasphemy, they later entered the police station and started firing,” he said, adding that a senior Police officer, Superintendent of Police (SP) Saddar Malik Irshad narrowly escaped while his Police guard was wounded in the shooting.
