PTI reports that cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) blew up a gram panchayat (village level self-Government institution) office building and a go down in Malkangiri District during a bandh (general shut down) called by the outfit on January 2 against alleged Police excesses. Around 50 armed Maoists attacked the gram panchayat office at Panasput in Chitrakonda area of Malkangiri and drove away those inside before triggering an explosion, Police said. The Maoists also stormed a go down located near the office and blasted it with explosives before disappearing into a nearby forest, they said. Nobody was harmed or injured, they added. Meanwhile, the bandh called by Maoists in Orissa and four other States against alleged Police excesses and the proposed anti-naxal operations had little impact barring stray incidents of tree felling in Malkangiri and disruption of traffic in Rayagada District. Many Government buses stopped plying in Malkangiri and Rayagada Districts, where trees were used to block roads.

About 40 Maoists entered the building of the Middle English School in under K Balang town on January 3 and looted 50 quintals of rice stored there before setting off an explosion. Maoists had blasted four school buildings and a hospital besides two buildings in the gram panchayat last month. About 3,000 to 4,000 villagers have left their homes in panic and were sheltering in camps in K Balang.

A goods train was also derailed in the incident. Suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres raided the forest beat office at Gapiballavpur block (administrative division) in the West Midnapore District in the night of January 6 and looted cash from the employees, reports Indian Express. According to Police, a group of 20-25 armed Maoists entered Kamlashole forest beat office, which is 10 kilometres from the Orissa border. They ransacked the beat office and allegedly looted INR 36,000 from four employees. They also looted traditional weapons used by the tribals which were seized by the forest guards, Police said. The Maoists also allegedly assaulted the forest guard.

Confirming the incident, Chandil Sub Divisional Police Officer Mandan Mohan Lal said the Maoists were demanding that the owner of the company should fulfill all the demands of the local people. However, he did not elaborate on the demands. Lal added that the Maoists fired six to eight rounds in the air. The manager of the company Punit Gupta told PTI that the incident was a conspiracy hatched by the vested interest.

It was a suicide attack,” Liaquat Ali, a Police official in Tank said. An intelligence official in Peshawar confirmed the incident, saying the office belonged to Qari Misbahhuddin, brother of Qari Zainuddin, a late rival of former Pakistani Taliban ‘chief’ Baitullah Mehsud. This is the second suicide attack during 24 hours after suicide bombers targeted an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp at the Kacha Pakka on the outskirts of Kohat. Police official Faizullah, who witnessed the attack, said the bomber wanted to target the Police Station, but had to detonate the explosives in the car early when officers tried to stop him. Faizullah said the explosion severely damaged the Police Station and a primary school. Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan said all those killed in the attack were civilians, while nine Policemen and two Frontier Corps personnel were among the injured. A bomb disposal squad (BDS) official said one-and-a-half kilogrammes of explosives packed in a schoolbag were used in the blast, which were detonated by a timed device. The second blast occurred at Qissa Khawani Bazaar of Peshawar when a suicide bomber walked into the crowd and detonated explosives.Capital City Police Officer Liaquat Ali said, “Just after the conclusion of a Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) demonstration against load shedding, a young suicide bomber aged 14, walked towards a Police mobile Van and detonated explosives strapped to his body”. “Twenty-three people were killed including three Police officials. At least 41 persons were injured,” Senior Police Official Imran Kishwar said. According to sources a group of more than 30 armed Maoists reached the village at a distance of 35 kilometres from District headquarters town of Malkangiri around midnight. At least 30 civilians were injured, eight of them seriously, when the cadres of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) attacked the locals at a secondary school in Phulbariya of Siraha District on December 23, reports Kantipuronline. Pankaj Ray, one of the victims, said that the UCPN-M attacked following a row over the appointment of Jagadish Gai as the new secondary school principal in place of Jiwichh Sah by the District Education Office. The locals have been accusing that the UCPN-M affiliated office bearers of the school management committee brought Gai with the intention to misappropriate the fund donated for the construction of a new school building by the Indian Embassy and the lawmaker Mahendra Paswan.

The Hindu reports that a group of around 30 suspected cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and the Maoist-backed People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) set ablaze three houses of ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supporters at Nayagram area in West Midnapore District late in the night of December 25. According to the Police, the group of Maoists ransacked the house of Ranjit Adhikary at Nosai village and later set it ablaze. "The same group then went to neighbouring Bachurkhayar village and set ablaze the houses of Naren Mahato and Anam Bera. By the time fire service personnel reached the spot, the houses were burnt to ashes," Superintendent of Police (SP) Pravin Tripathi, of Jhargram Police District, said. No one was injured in the incident, since all three families had fled the area five months back due to the threat posed by the Maoists.

A group of around 100 armed Maoists stormed the village, about 350 kilometres from Nagpur, entered the house of Preeti and set it ablaze.
