Gas supply to vast areas in the country was suspended late on June 6-evening when the main compressor plant at Sui in the Balochistan province was closed after the main pipeline feeding the plant was blown up, according to Dawn. “The plant has been closed temporarily as a precautionary measure,” official sources in Sui said. Sources in the Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) said the region to which the supply had been affected stretched from Balochistan to Sindh to Punjab to the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). “Gas supply has been stopped to many industrial units, including fertiliser plants, in Punjab, Sindh and other areas of the country,” the sources said. According to reports, armed insurgents planted a powerful explosive device beneath the pipeline of 20 inches diameter taking gas to the Sui plant from the gas field destroying a large portion of the pipeline on the outskirts of Sui town.

Power supply to 15 of the 29 districts of Balochistan, including capital Quetta, was disrupted after four pylons supporting two transmission lines in Mach were blown up by the insurgents on September 10-night, according to Dawn. According to the Quetta Electric Supply Company (Qesco), saboteurs planted explosives round four pylons of 220kv Uch-Sibi-Quetta transmission line and 132kv Sibi-Mach-Quetta line and detonated it. The blast blew up the huge towers plunging more than half of Balochistan province into darkness. “The power supply to 28 out of 55 grid stations was affected and with blowing up of four towers Qesco is facing a shortage of 300MW electricity,” Qesco spokesman Jabrail Khan said. “Restoration of the two transmission lines will take at least two weeks to complete,” Khan said, adding that Qesco would suffer a daily loss of PKR 30 million until the supply was restored. The affected districts include Quetta, Kalat, Mastung, Khuzdar, Kharan, Nushki, Chagai, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Zhob and Sherani.

According to IANS, cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), on November 23, set ablaze eight vehicles, opened fire on the para-military India Reserve Battalion (IRB) camp and on the huts of workers engaged in a road-building project at Belapari in the West Midnapore district, across the border with Jharkhand. The target of the attack was the Prime Minister's Gram Sadak Yojana road project, which the Maoists believe will give security forces better access to insurgents’ hideouts, police sources said. A senior police official said, “The guerrillas use a forest corridor to travel to and from Jharkhand. If good roads are built, security forces can step up vigil.” The incident is the latest in a series of attacks in the region in the run-up to a state-wide shutdown called by the Maoists on December 14.
