Three militants were killed in a gun battlethat ended in the Arwani area of Anantnag District on December 9, reports Daily Excelsior. However, the identity of militants could not be established as the bodies were burnt beyond recognition. An unnamed Defence spokesman said that the Security Forces (SFs) killed three militants and recovered three weapons. An unnamed Police spokesman while giving details said that Police received specific information about the presence of militants in the house of one Mushtaq Ahmad Ganie son of Ghulam Qadir Ganie at Hassanpora in the Arwani area of Anantnag on December 7. “As per the information, Mushtaq Ahmad Ganie works as an Over Ground Worker (OGW) of terrorists ofLeT [Lashkar-e-Toiba] outfit and not only harboured terrorists in his house, but also provides all sort of logistical support to them”, the spokesman said. “Based on this input, an operation was launched by joint team of Anantnag, Awantipora police along with Army and CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force]. The said house was cordoned off and when the security forces party entered into the house for searching, terrorist fired on them. The fire was retaliated and the ensuing gun battle lasted for almost two days. The operation concluded today [December 9] when a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPFs Quick Action Team (QAT) stormed the house and cleared it. The cover fire to the storming team was given by Army troops” the spokesman said. He said that during the search operation, two bodies of the militants and three AK-rifles along with other incriminating material has been recovered from the debris of the house. As reported earlier, one civilian was killed in the cross-fire on December 8.Meanwhile, an unnamed Police official said that the three LeT terrorists killed in the encounter at Anantnag were planning to create fresh unrest in the Valley on the lines of disturbances that followed after Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militant Burhan Wani was gunned down in a similar encounter on July 8, reports Times of India on December 10. "They wanted the protests by locals’ supporters to get out of hand and lead to a law & order face-off between the forces and local sympathizers. This, they believed, would have triggered a fresh spell of unrest in the Valley. However, with locals failing to come in aggressive support and confining themselves to pelting stones at the forces, it seems their plans went awry, and they finally fell to the bullets after a protracted gunfight," said the officer.

Militants looted INR 984,000 from Ratnipora branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank in Pulwama District on December 15, Daily Excelsior reports. Superintendent of Police (SP), Pulwama, Rayees Bhat, said, “From the Ratnipora bank branch, Rs 9.84 lakh [INR 984,000] have been looted and out of which 16,000 is old currency while rest is new currency. Today we got the CCTV footage from the bank and it has been established that Lashkar-e-Toiba [LeT] is behind the bank robberies. The militants involved in today’s robbery are Arif Dar of Lelhar and Abu Ali. They are wanted in the bank robbery and two others who were outside acted as scouts and were guarding their colleagues”. Significantly, this is the fourth bank robbery in the State since July 9, 2016, and third since November 8, 2016. On December 8, 2016, militants had targeted a branch of the same Bank at Arihal in the same district and looted INR 133,800. On November 21, militants had robbed a bank in Chrar-e-Sharief area of Budgam District, adds Times of India.SP, Bhat said, “In Budgam we have shown the photographs to the employees and two of the dacoits have been identified as Abu Ali and Abu Ismail, both foreign terrorists and one local militant Arif of Lelhar. Today [December 15] when we spoke to the bank officials, same identification was established,” reports Daily Excelsior. Bhat said that police reached in no time but militants had managed to flee. The SP said that stone pelting diverted the attention of police which gave militants enough time to flee. “Due to stone pelting our attention got diverted. Otherwise the leads we had got we could have chased them”, he said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) charge sheet in the Pathankot terror attack (January 2016) case not only provides evidence on the strike at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base but also links its perpetrator Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) with blasts in Tangdhar, Samba, Kathua and Rajbagh in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) last year (2015), reports The Times of India on December 21. The main handler of the Pathankot attackers, Kashif Jan, had claimed in his Facebook messages that he had planned the attacks at Kathua and Samba on March 20-21, 2015. He was in constant touch with the Pathankot attackers over phone during the strike. Government sources said Pakistan would be informed about the charge sheet against JeM ‘chief’ Maulana Masood Azhar, his brother Abdul Rauf, Shahid Latif, Kashif and other JeM activists. NIA Director General, Sharad Kumar said, "All evidence, be it technical, oral, digital, DNA samples or field investigations, is irrefutable. It...can stand the scrutiny of any international authority"(sic).NIA claimed in its Pathankot charge sheet that it recovered documentary and digital evidence pointing to JeM's role in Samba and Rajbagh attacks too. The charge sheet said the terrorists had left two slips of paper in the Pathankot attack, which had the same message in Urdu and Hindi, "Jaish-e-Mohammad zindabad, Tangdhar se le kar Samba Kathua Rajbagh aur Delhi tak, Afzal Guru shaheed ke jan nisar tum ko milte rahenge. Insha Allah." Intelligence sources said JeM was involved in all the attacks. Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) has also been active in J&K over the last year (2015) and was held responsible for several attacks, including the one on the Army base in Uri

Pakistan's intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), is planning to open new fronts to launch attacks in India, India Today reports on December 27. According to intelligence sources, ISI has made a tactical shift in its strategy for India. After several attacks on the western border, the ISI plans to open a new front in eastern India by launching an attack from a secret terror launch pad. Indian intelligence sources said that ISI has recently set up a terror camp in Mae Sot, which is situated on Thailand-Myanmar border. Intelligence sources have further revealed that ISI is using Taliban fighters to train Rohingya Muslims to launch terror attacks. The terror launch pad in Mae Sot will be used to launch attacks on India and Bangladesh. If sources are to be believed, ISI with the help of the Pakistan Taliban is training groups like Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami Arkana (HuJI-A) and some Khalistani militants.Agencies believe that ISI is arranging huge funds and weapons for terror activities, and recently arranged a meeting between Maulana Abdul Kuddus and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed. Maulana Abdul Kuddus is a Rohingya Muslim of Pakistani origin and heads the HuJI-A. He is believed to be close to the Pakistan Taliban.

Two anti-India terror organisations, Indian Mujahideen (IM) and al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) have been added to Canada’s list of proscribed groups on December 28, reports Hindustan Times. Both groups were designated as terrorist entities under Canada’s Criminal Code. The announcement was made by public safety and emergency preparedness minister Ralph Goodale. In a statement, the nodal department Public Safety Canada said the IM had “organised training in Pakistan with militant Islamist groups such as Lashkar-e-Tayyiba [LeT] - a listed entity under the Criminal Code”.Following the listing, Canada will act against groups or individuals funding or associating with these two terror organisations. The statement said, “The Criminal Code mandates potentially severe penalties for persons and organisations that deal in the property or finances of a listed entity.“It is a crime to knowingly participate in, or contribute to, any activity of a listed entity for the purpose of enhancing the ability of the entity to facilitate or carry out a terrorist activity.” Public Safety Canada noted the “actions” of the two groups “meet the legal threshold set out in the Criminal Code”.The statement added: “The IM’s stated goal is to carry out terrorist actions against non-Muslims for their oppression of Muslims. The group’s primary method of attack is multiple coordinated bombings in crowded areas against economic and civilian targets to maximise terror and casualties.” Describing the IM as “a Sunni Islamist militant group, consisting primarily of former members of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)”, the agency noted it “is best understood as a label for a relatively amorphous, decentralised network that operates through a number of modules across India”.Following a mandatory two-year review period for listing entities, other terrorist groups such as the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen remain on the Canadian list, which now totals 53 entities, including Khalistani groups such as Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF).The LeT designation includes fronts of the group, including Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), Paasban-e-Kashmir (Kashmir Brigade) and Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF). The LeT’s student wing, Al-Muhammadia Students, listed recently by the US government as a foreign terrorist organisation, does not yet figure in the Canadian list.

Two Army men were injured in a gun battle with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants in Shahgund area of Hajin in Bandipora District on December 29, reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said that on a specific input about the presence of militants in the area, Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police launched a joint operation in Shahgund Hajin area early today.
