On January 3, in an interview to The Telegraph, the ‘commander-in-chief’ of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Paresh Barua, said bloodbath in the State would cease only if the Union government agreed to a ‘scientific dialogue’ with the outfit. Baruah demanded ‘Assam’s independence’ through a ‘logical and reasonable’ talk. He claimed responsibility for the January 2-killing of three SULFA men including, Abinash Bordoloi, in Nalbari. He said it was a ‘vendetta strike’ against his former comrades. Three members of the Surrendered United Liberation Front of Asom (SULFA) were killed in an ambush by ULFA terrorists. The dead included Avinash Bordoloi, a prominent ULFA member who had surrendered along with another ULFA leader Lohit Deuri in August 2000.

The Union Home Ministry, on January 23, sounded maximum alert in all the Northeastern States following intelligence reports indicating sabotage by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) on the eve of the Republic Day on January 26. Patrolling has been intensified at all oil installations, refineries, pipelines and railway tracks. According to police sources, a group of armed terrorists stormed the village at night and fired on the villagers indiscriminately from sophisticated weapons. Authorities are reluctant to reopen the schools as three principals had already been shot dead and many others have survived bullet injuries. It has also been reported that, in order to pay the terrorists, the tuition fee in the schools has been hiked from Rs 65 to Rs 115 per month.

Meanwhile, police sources revealed that the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has hatched a plan to target several prominent Ministers during the forthcoming State Legislative Assembly elections. Sources revealed that the Chief Minister and his wife, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP), were identified as the prime targets by the ULFA. The other Ministers likely to be targeted by the ULFA include Agriculture Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Revenue Minister Zoii Nath Sarma, Municipal Administration Minister Biraj Sarma, Minister of State for Tourism Jagadish Bhuyan and Minister of State for Veterinary Hiranya Konwar. The State police have already beefed up the security of these Ministers.

The National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Khaplang (NSCN-K) issued a warning to the Unrepresented Nations People’s Organisation (UNPO) asking it to stop supporting the National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Issak Muivah (NSCN-IM) without knowing the ‘ground realities’ in Nagaland. In a statement issued by Akaho Assumi, secretary incharge of ‘ministry of information and publicity’, the NSCN-K asked the UNPO to come to Nagaland to get first hand information about the current situation in Nagaland. The NSCN-K alleged "Nagas have suffered more in the hands of NSCN-IM than in the hands of the forces of occupational countries." The statement pointed it was not wise on part of the UNPO or any other NGO to promote any organisation like the NSCN-IM from faraway places without having proper knowledge about the organisation.

According to media reports of December 21, the United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) has issued instructions to the farmers and traders of Karbi Anglong district not to sale or export ginger product in the district to '‘outside hands’. Through its indefinite economic blockade launched on December 20, the UPDS has ‘banned’ the movement of forest products and ginger outside the Karbi Hills. The move has threatened to jeopardize the entire economy of the district. However, the district police chief, while speaking to the media, said the blockade had failed to evoke any response anywhere in the district. "Normal life has not been affected at all while transport vehicles are plying as usual," he said.
