According to media reports, police in Ludhiana, on March 8, said the consignment of arms recovered from terrorists near Sahnewal, near Ludhiana in Punjab, following an encounter, were probably meant for use in a major terrorist attack in New Delhi. Police also disclosed the identity of the terrorist involved in the March 9-encounter, who had committed suicide while the encounter was on. He was identified as Sandeep Johar alias Deepak, a resident of Delhi. Police also arrested in Ludhiana another terrorist––Surjit Singh, a resident of Kaka Kandiala. He had earlier escaped during the March 9-encounter. A search is on for a woman associate of the terrorists, police officials said. Diaries recovered from the terrorists contained names of Pakistan nationals and arms smugglers. The arms were reportedly supplied by terrorists based in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), reports said. Investigations, thus far, pointed that the activities of the group were being directed from the Tihar Jail, New Delhi, where three accomplices of the terrorists are lodged. Johat was earlier imprisoned in Tihar Jail under the National Security Act (NSA) between September 2001 and October 31, 2002 and was involved in 24 criminal cases. He had links with Pakistan smugglers operating under the ISI, who supplied arms to him.
