Three Maoists were arrested and a 10 kilograms tiffin bomb was recovered from their possession in Kondgaon District on January 6, reports The Pioneer. The cadres were arrested from the forest between Ranapal and Nawagaon villages under Mardapal Police Station limits when a joint team of Security Forces (SFs) was out on duty to ensure security to the road construction work, according to Kondagaon, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Maheshwar Nag. The construction of road is underway between Ranapal and Bayanar in Mardapal area, he said. The composite squad, involving 41st battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and local Police, was carrying out patrolling to provide security to the construction works, when it spotted three Maoists hiding in the forest between Ranapal and Nawagaon, following which they were arrested, he said. A 10-kg tiffin bomb, one bundle wire, one dry battery, Maoist literatures and a Naxal banner in the name of East Bastar Division of the outlawed CPI-Maoist were recovered from their possession, Nag said.

The IEDs had been fully fabricated and were ready to use, which indicated that Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants, to whom the consignment belonged, were planning to use them at some sensitive installations on or before Republic Day (January 26) celebrations. Acting on a tip off, a CRPF team headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Sanjay Kumar launched an operation in Chargi forest in Peterwar block. During the operation the team detected an artificial tunnel near Chargi forest which the rebels used for strong arms and ammunition. Bokaro Superintendent of Police (SP), Kartik S. said two country-made pistols, 45 cartridges, 318 piece of electronic detonators, three magazines, one rifle of 315 bore, huge cartridges of Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) and others explosives were recovered from the artificial tunnel. The arms were stored by the members of Santosh Mahto in the forest to carry out an attack by the Maoists on the Security Forces (SFs). Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer, Surendra Das said the Maoists had planted the explosives near Tilakdih village to target the SF personnel. A joint team of Army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) laid a siege to Chaigund in Keegam area of Shopian District following specific inputs about the presence of militants in the village. As the SFs intensified the searches, the militants hiding in the house of one Ghulam Hassan Bhat opened fire triggering an encounter. Shakir Ahmad Mir, a resident of Qalampora village of Pulwama district, was killed and two teenage girls, identified as Sumi Jan and Sabreena were wounded during the initial gun fight. The encounter continued till evening and two militants of HM were killed. During the searches of the debris of the house one AK-47 and two magazines and one INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle and two magazines were recovered.Clashes broke out in the village during the operation as protesters pelted stones at the SFs to disrupt the operation. The SFs fired teargas to disperse them. Meanwhile, Internet services were snapped in the twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama to prevent the spreading of rumours and violence.A Police spokesman said that on a specific information, the SFs laid a cordon at Chaigund area of Shopian in South Kashmir. “The hiding militants under the clad of Burka tried to break cordon and fired indiscriminately on the search party. The security forces retaliated during which Burka-clad militants were forced to go back into hiding. During indiscriminate firing by the militants and the retaliatory fire one civilian Shakir Ahmad Mir resident of Kalampora Pulwama got killed and two ladies Sabreena Jan and Sumi Jan, both the residents of Keegam, Shopian received bullet injuries. The injured ladies were taken to SMHS hospital where from they were shifted to SKIMS Soura for specialised treatment”, the spokesman said. The spokesman said that Sumi Jan was a resident of the house in which the encounter took place and Sabreena Jan is a sister of HM militant Sameer Wani who was also hiding in the house and was later killed. “So far one AK 47, one INSAS and two dead bodies of militants have been recovered from the encounter site”, he said.

A joint team of West Singhbhum District Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) destroyed a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp in an encounter with the CPI-Maoist cadres at Porahat forest under Karaikela Police Station in West Singhbhum District on January 26, reports Hindustan Times. The exchange of fire between both the sides ensued for nearly half an hour, but no casualty was reported from either side. The Security Forces (SFs), however, destroyed the CPI-Maoist camp after the rebels escaped from the spot. The combing operation was launched to hunt the CPI-Maoist leader Jeevan Kandulna, who was reportedly active in Dogebera and adjacent villages in Porahat forest. After 100 rounds of firing, the CPI-Maoist cadres along with their leader escaped from the site. Two CPI-Maoist cadres were reportedly injured and the SFs are trying to trace them. The Police recovered a rifle (looted from the Police earlier), a country-made pistol, several bullets, detonators, wire, CPI-Maoist literature, medicines, food and other daily use articles from the camp. The West Bengal Police on February 4 arrested Azhar Hossain (22)—a suspected militant of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), and recovered huge collection of ammunition and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosives from his possession in Ratnapur village in Samserganj Tehsil of Murshidabad District of West Bengal, reports Hindustan Times. The Police presented Azhar Hossain before a court in Jangipur in Murshidabad District (West Bengal) and sought 14-days Police custody. The Police charged Azhar Hossain under Sections 120, 121, 122, and 123 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860. The Police team raided his house and recovered 75 rounds of ammunition, a loaded magazine, 25 kilograms of explosives and jihadi literature, said an unnamed officer of the District Intelligence wing. “Interrogations of the arrested accused have revealed that several modules and sleeper cells of the JMB are now active in Murshidabad and neighbouring Districts of West Bengal. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an encounter with the Police in a forest area under Etapalli area in Gadchiroli District on February 5, during the day-long bandh (general shutdown) called by Maoists in the Dandkaranya region, reports Business Standard. The incident occurred in Etapalli area at around 3 PM when the Maoists opened fire at a patrolling team of C-60 commandos, the Gadchiroli Police said in a release. "After the gun battle, the Maoists fled while leaving the body of a male ultra behind," it said. An 8 mm rifle and articles of daily use of Maoists were recovered from the spot, according to the release. Police are trying to identify the slain Maoist.

Police said that upon his disclosure four OGWs were arrested and arms and ammunition were recovered from them. They were identified as Umar Gani Sheikh son of Abdul Gani Sheikh resident of Drangbal Pampore, Jan Mohammad Khanday alias Jehangir son of Abdul Rashid Khanday resident of Meech Pampore, Owais Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Rashid of Danak Mohalla Khrew and Muzaffar Hussain Bhat son of Ghulam Mohammad of Tulibagh Pampore. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘jan militia commander’ was killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) near Hiroli village in Dantewada District on February 8, reports First Post. The exchange of fire took place late Wednesday (February 7) evening in Dokapara forest under Kirandul Police Station limits when a joint team of SFs was out on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] operation, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Gorakhnath Baghel said. "The composite squad of Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) was cordoning off the forest area on the border of Dantewada and Bijapur districts, around 450 kilometres away from the capital, Raipur, when it came under heavy fire from ultras in Dokapara, leading to the gun-battle," he said. After the guns fell silent, the SFs recovered the body of a Maoist along with one 315 bore gun from the spot, the ASP said, adding that the Maoist has been identified as Ungami alias Chakra, who was active as a ‘jan militia commander’.

Police achieved a major breakthrough by unearthing the escape plot of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ‘commander’ Naveed Jhat and arrested 16 militants and their Over Ground Workers (OGWs) in this connection on February 8, reports Daily Excelsior. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the escape of LeT commander from SMHS Hospital, picked up 16 militants and OGWs from South Kashmir and Budgam. Ten militants and OGWs were picked up from South Kashmir while six suspected were rounded up from Budgam. However, Additional Director General Police (ADGP) and Inspector General (IG) Kashmir, Muneer Khan told a press conference in Srinagar that four persons including militants and OGWs were arrested in connection with the escape of Naveed. “To expedite the investigations, a SIT has been constituted by DIG CKR, Srinagar. The SIT so constituted conducted initial investigation and during investigation names of the following terrorists and OGWs involved in the commission of this act of terror, have surfaced”, he said. Khan said that from the possession of Shakeel Ahmad Bhat and Tika Khan a pistol each with ammunitions has been recovered. “During the course of investigation it was established that Hilal, Shakeel, Tika Khan were masterminds in the whole conspiracy. Tika Khan has also been a frequent visitor to Central Jail Srinagar and was in contact with Naveed Jhat. He visited Central Jail on different pretexts. Moreover, Naveed and rest of the gang were in communication using mobile devices during the conspiring stage”, he said. The arrested accused Dinesh Garg alias Ankit Garg (34) and Adish Kumar Jain (54) are residents of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. During the searches conducted at the premises of Dinesh Garg, INR 15,00,000 cash, two currency note counting machines, one Indian made pistol with ammunition, one laptop, four mobile phones and relevant documents were recovered. The recoveries made from the residence and shop of Adish Kumar Jain included INR 32,84,000, one Chinese made pistol with ammunition, some documents containing mobile numbers of associates, currency notes of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, USA, Japan, Thailand, Oman, and electronic devices including two laptops and three mobile phones. The NIA informed that the two had been in telephonic contact with some Indian gold smugglers, based in Saudi Arabia and were found paying the cost of the smuggled gold purchased by them in cash to their conduits and couriers, one of them being the now arrested Abdul Samad. They were also acting as hawala (illegal money laundering) operators. During the investigation, it also surfaced that a sum of INR ,50,000 delivered by Samad to the another arrested LeT operative Shaikh Abdul Naeem was collected from these two arrested persons.

The encounter took place at around 12.30 pm in the forest when a joint team of of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), District Reserve Guard (DRG), District Force and Hawk Force of Madhya Pradesh Police was out on a counter-insurgency operation in Gatapar, located around 160 kilometres away from the State capital, Raipur, Superintendent of Police (SP), Prashant Agrawal said. "After the guns fell silent, security forces searched the area and recovered bodies of two naxals [Left Wing Extremists (LWEs)] along with two weapons," Agrawal said. However, No casualties have been reported during the exchange of fire. Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP), Jagmohan Meena said there were around 50 Maoists, including some leaders, at the camp at the time of firing. "Specifically, we can't divulge as which Maoist leader was present at the camp, but there were a few Maoist leaders. Unable to face heavy firing from our side, the Maoists fled the spot," Meena said, adds The Telegraph. A surrendered Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militant has stated that the militant group has planted over 30 Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) in and around East Garo Hills to sabotage the ensuing Assembly Elections, reports Northeast Today on February 21. Three of the 30 IEDs have been accounted for by the Security Forces (SFs). Superintendent of Police (SP) Ringrang Momin stated that ‘we have received the information but are yet to verify whether the same is true or exaggerated’. SP also said that SF 10, the Meghalaya Police commandos have been pushed into action to recover the remaining. According to Police one IED was recovered prior to the death of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate, while another was recovered on February 20 from Samanda in East Garo Hills District. During late night of February 19 and early hours of February 20, the BSF and STF team spotted suspicious movement alongside the border area and challenged two Pakistani smugglers to surrender, but they opened fire on the troops. In two separate combined search operations, joint teams of Army and Police recovered a major cache of weapons, ammunition and other war like stores in Hari Budha and Bhatidhar forests in Poonch District on February 26, reports Daily Excelsior. Acting on a specific input on likely dump of arms, a joint search operation by Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Police was launched in the two forests. During the search operation, two pistols, grenades of various types including Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and UBGL (Underbarrel Grenade Launchers) grenades, communication equipment, GPS (Global Positioning System), Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)/ explosives, ammunition of AK 47 and other war like stores were recovered. Currency worth INR 50,000 was also found at the site of recovery. This successful operation has foiled the nefarious designs of militants, sources said.

The encounter ensued when SFs launched a cordon and search operation at Hajin’s Shakoor Din Mohalla in the morning after receiving information about presence of militants there, Jammu and Kashmir Police said in a statement. Arms and ammunition, including AK 47 rifles, and other incriminating materials were also recovered from the encounter site. The Police identified two of the ten CPI-Maoist cadres as Pedda Budri (25) and Sanjeev (35) on March 2. The encounter started at around 4 PM on March 1, when the Greyhounds of Telangana, assisted by Special Police Personnel from Chhattisgarh, started the combing operation. The combing team came across at least 50-100 CPI-Maoist cadres in a forest near Pujarikanker, and asked them to surrender but the Maoists opened fire. All the CPI-Maoist cadres killed are suspected to be from the Telangana State Committee and combing operations started after a tip-off about a big meeting of CPI-Maoist somewhere along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border.Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bhadradri Kothagudem District, Ambar Kishore Jha said ‘The Maoists opened fire and our forces responded. After the firing stopped, 10 bodies were found in the area. A militant, identified as Shahid Ahmad Dar son of Mushtaq Ahmad Dar of Jamnagari was killed as he fired at an Army vehicle at Pahnoo in Shopian District in the evening. Three OWGS, identified as Suhail Khalil Wagay, Mohammad Shahid Khan and Shahnawaz Ahmad Wagay who were travelling in a Swift car were also killed in the gun battle. Srinagar based Defence Ministry spokesman, Colonel Rajesh Kalia, said in Srinagar that militants attacked Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) of army’s 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) at Pahnoo village at around 2000 hours. The fire was retaliated triggering off a gunfight. He said that in the exchange of gunfire a militant was killed and his body along with an AK-rifle was recovered. “Three of his accomplices, OGWs, were also found dead in the car in which they were travelling”, he said. The exact details about the incident were not known as the Police was tight lipped on it, said report. However, locals said that these civilians were travelling in a Swift car when the incident took place and were killed in retaliatory fire by Army. Police immediately reached the spot and took possession of the bodies. The bodies have been kept at District Police Lines Shopian for the medico legal formalities.
