On January 1, the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) arrested an individual, identified as Umar Aziz from Karnah Tehsil (revenue unit) in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), reports Daily Excelsior. Five Pistols, 10 Pistol Magazines, 77 Pistol rounds, one pistol cleaning rod, one Pistol User Manual guide, four hand Grenades and 10 packets of Heroin like narcotics substance weighing 9.450 Kgs was recovered from Garangnard Chatkadi in Kupwara District in J&K on disclosure of the arrested accused. The consignment was meant for The Resistance Front (TRF). An FIR under number 01/2023 u/s 7/25 Arms Act (AA), 5 Explosive Substances Act (ESA) 8/21-29 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, Act (NDPS)13,18, 20, 23 & 38 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) stands registered.

Two persons, including one Police Constable and a terrorist were killed during a clash between terrorist and Police when former attacked a Police checkpost in the Shahbaz Khel area of Lakki Marwat District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 1, reports Dawn. “The terrorists attacked the police [checkpost] with heavy and automatic weapons and tried to break in,” Lakki Marwat Police spokesperson Shahid Hameed said, adding that RPG-7s, grenades and other “advanced weapons” were used. The killed Policeman was identified as Constable Tehsinullah of the Rapid Response Force while the terrorist was identified as Owais Abdulkhel. Weapons were recovered from his possession.

Two couriers of the Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist) were arrested by a joint squad of Charla Police and the personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during a vehicle checking drive on the outskirts of the Charla Mandal (administrative sub division) headquarters town in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on January 5, reports The Hindu. A bundle of 200-metre cordex wire, 10 pressure cookers, some substances used for making explosive materials, and a tractor-trolley were seized from them. The arrested persons were identified as P Sammaiah (35), and Satyaveni (33), both hailing from Charla. According to the Police, the duo had been working as couriers for the CPI-Maoist Dalam (armed squad) led by the Bhadradri-Kothagudem division ‘secretary’ Azad by providing essential commodities and explosive materials to the ultras operating in the neighbouring Chhattisgarh for the last two years.

At least 11 terrorists, including a militant ‘commander’ and two suicide bombers, were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Wana area of South Waziristan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 5, reports Dawn. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Security Forces (SFs) “successfully foiled a high-profile terrorist activity” during the operation. “During intense exchange of fire, 11 terrorists, including terrorist commander Hafizullah alias Tor Hafiz and two suicide bombers, were killed,” the ISPR said. A cache of weapons and ammunitions were also recovered from the possession of killed terrorists.

An encounter between Police and cadres of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC/TPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist), took place in Angada Forest area under Kunda Police Station limits in Chatra District of Jharkhand on January 6, reports prabhatkhabar.com. Seeing the Police dominating, the TSPC cadres were able to escape by taking advantage of the forest while firing. After the encounter, Police recovered a huge quantity of goods from the encounter site. The recoveries included, one walkie talkie, wire, army paternal cloth, two solar plates with two mobile chargers, cooking utensils, steel plates eight, rice 20 kilograms, fresh vegetables, blanket, civil cloth, pithu bag and other daily use items. Following inputs that ‘regional commander’ of the banned Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] organization TSPC, Akraman Ganjhu, carrying a prize of INR 1.5 million, and the ‘regional commander’, Shashikant alias Arif, carrying a prize of INR 1 million, are busy in the forest to carry out the incident, the operation was launched to arrest them. Seeing the Police coming towards them, the cadres started firing on the Police party, and the Police fired in retaliation. After this, the TSPC cadres escaped by taking advantage of the forest.

Two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed inside tiffin boxes, planted by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, were defused by the Security Forces (SFs) in Gorra village under Edka Police Station limits in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on January 9, reports The Print. “Acting on a tip-off regarding a Naxalite pamphlet, thrown on a gravel road leading to village Gorra, a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) Force, accompanied by police personnel reached the spot and carefully inspected the road,” Police said in a statement. During the inspection, security personnel found Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] pamphlets and traced two 25 kilograms IEDs, concealed inside tiffin boxes dumped at around 150 meters before Gorra village and defused them before they went off. The IEDs are believed to be planted by Maoists in the area, with the intent to injure security personnel. A case has been registered at Edka Police Station in Narayanpur against ‘unidentified’ Kiskodo Area Committee of CPI-Maoist under sections of the Explosive Substances Act.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), an IBO was initiated “to clear a hideout linked with firing incidents on security forces along M-8, in general area Talsar, Hoshab” on a tip-off about the presence of terrorists. “As a result of continuous intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) of the area, a location of terrorists was identified and security forces were heli inserted [to nab the terrorists].” During the heavy exchange of fire, all four terrorists were killed, while a cache of arms and ammunition including improvised explosive devices (IEDs) was also recovered from their possession, the ISPR added.

A CRPF statement said, “The troops consisting of multiple teams conducted a search in the targeted area and discovered a cache of arms and ammunition hidden at multiple locations”. The seizures included 3583 bullets of various calibres, four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), an under-barrel grenade launcher, two wireless sets and an interceptor, six detonators, two dozen pressure triggers used in IEDs, and fuse wire. The Police recovered 3 kg and 350 grams of C04 high explosives, 01 bar of explosives weighing 610 grams, 2 bars of explosives weighing 205 grams each, 1 bar of explosives weighing 105 grams, 288 ammunition of 9mm type, T56 type 181 ammunition, five 3.8 mm type ammunition, 8 ammunition used for 12 bore type firearms, 10 electronic detonators used to detonate bombs, 153 non-electronic detonators, a smoke bomb, 32 feet of wire used to detonate explosive devices and several other items. The Police also recovered 153 sweet balls mixed with cannabis from a shop owned by the retired Army Sergeant. Investigations revealed that the suspected sergeant had taken the military equipment from an Army camp in Mullaitivu in Southern Province. Police information stated that the Police received information about these explosives from a person who heard the suspect talking about a deal to sell them to someone.

The Police also seized detonators and other material left behind by the Maoists. Chintoor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), P.K.V. Maheswara Reddy, said in a release that Dalam member Gali Narayana Reddy of Sri Satya Sai District and a 16-year-old boy were arrested in the raid. Narayana Reddy was involved in five major cases, including the torching of a private bus at Sarivela in Chintoor agency in 2022. Narayana Reddy was also involved in the killing of two tribal men — a Chintoor-based person in January 2023 and another person in 2021 — on the suspicion that they were ‘police informers’. “In November 2020, Narayana Reddy got in touch with the Maoists through a social networking platform and was encouraged to join the party by Maoist leader Koyyada Sumbaiah of Munuguru. He has since been active in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh,” said the ASP.

Since October 2022 he has been working as the Sabari LOS ‘commander’ and carries a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) weapon. He was involved in the abduction and murder of Kurnapalli deputy Sarpanch (head of the Panchayat, village level local self-Government institution) in Cherla Mandal in August 2022. He was also involved in the murder of Mandal Parishad Territorial Candidate (MPTC) member N Srinivas in July 2019, killing of 17 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnels in an ambush under Chintaguppa Police Station limits in March 2020 and killing of 24 CRPF personnels at Tekulagudem under Tarrem Police Station limits in Chhattisgarh State in April 2021. During interrogation Sandeep confessed to Police that he tried to surrender to Police many times but the Maoist leaders forced him to commit crimes. There were 27 cases booked against him in Telangana, seven cases in Andhra Pradesh and eight cases in Chhattisgarh State.

In a statement issued, Lakki Marwat Police spokesperson Shahid Hameed said that the operation was conducted in the jurisdiction of the Dadiwala Police Station after security personnel got a tip-off that terrorists were planning an attack on the Abbas police checkpost. “When the security teams reached the terrorists’ hideout, they opened fire at police officials from multiple directions. The police retaliated as well,” he said. Hameed said that when the firing stopped, the Police searched the site and found the bodies of six terrorists. Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashutosh Shekhar received information that some Maoists were on their way to deliver explosives to their ‘commander’. Based on the information, the SP said a team was constituted to initiate action and arrest them. Accordingly, the team launched a massive checking drive after cordoning off a road approaching Baripokhari village and arrested one Boj Hembram alias Kishun Hembram and seized a detonator and gelatine. On the lead provided by Boj during interrogation, Police arrested three other ultras with detonators and gelatine sticks from Tonto Police Station limits. The arrested Maoists confessed that they were active members of Maoist group and carrying the explosives for delivery on the instruction of their ‘commander’. The team also conducted raid in Rengrahatu village in West Singhbhum District on February 24, and arrested the ‘commander’ of Maoist militia group Damu Koda alias Judu Koda (35) and Birsing alias Chota Koda (35). The duo conceded that they were involved in setting vehicles a fire engaged in road construction work in Chiruiekir village on February 12. During an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation, Security Forces (SFs) unearthed a dump of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and recovered a huge quantity of explosive materials and other items from an area in Jantri Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) under Jodambo Police limits in Malkangiri District of Odisha on March 14, reports odishabytes.com. According to a Border Security Force (BSF) press release, the seized items included 14 detonators, seven gelatin sticks, four bundles of cordex wire, six batteries, electric wires, bundles of broken glass pieces wrapped in umbrella cloth, an empty tiffin box, and other items. Such items are used for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs). "The recovery of such Maoist items would certainly ensure safety and security for the security forces as well as the local populace in the region. Security personnel are also carrying out an operation to remove mines in Swabhiman Anchal, which was once a stronghold of Maoists," the press release added.

The CTD spokesman said that the arrested terrorists were associated with proscribed outfits. At least 55 IBOs were conducted in different Districts of the province to effectively deal with any untoward incident of terrorism, in which 56 suspected persons were interrogated and 11 alleged terrorists were arrested with weapons, explosives, and other prohibited materials. Among the arrested terrorists, three were cadres of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), namely Najibullah, Muhammad Tahir, and Abdul Sami, one was cadre of Tehreek Jafaria Muhammad Aftab, four cadres of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) namely Kaleemullah, Manzoor Khan, Niaz Muhammad and Muhammad Zubair, two cadres of Sipah Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), identified as Muhammad Hussain Muawiya and Muhammad Daniyal. The spokesman added that 883 grams of explosives, seven detonators, one hand grenade, 14 feet of safety fuse wire, two feet of prima cord, two leaflets of banned organizations, two receipt boxes, 122 stickers, 92 pamphlets, two flags of a banned outfit and 35290 rupees in cash have been recovered from the terrorists.

The Security Forces (SFs) on March 18 killed three terrorists during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Awaran District of Balochistan, reports Geo TV. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a statement said the IBO was initiated on March 15 to intercept a terrorist group operating in the general area of South Awaran. The terrorists were linked with firing and improvised explosive devices (IED) incidents along Turbat-Awaran Road and surrounding areas, read the statement. “Based on credible information, multiple ambushes had been laid along different routes in the area frequented by the terrorists for the last three days,” said the ISPR. A group of three terrorists was intercepted while moving towards their hideout, the ISPR said, adding that on being blocked, they opened fire on the SFs. During the ensuing heavy exchange of fire, all three terrorists were killed, while a cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered.
