A suspected Tehreeke Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant, involved in the attack on a Levies Thana in Zhob District, was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces on January 1, reports Dawn. Official sources said that a group of armed militants attacked the Levies Thana in Murgha Kibzai area of Zhob District and ransacked it before setting it on fire. The attackers were fleeing when FC troops reached there and opened fire on them. In the heavy exchange of fire, one attacker died. “The man killed belongs to TTP,” an FC spokesman said. After the incident, he said, a search operation was carried out in the Saman area of Kahan in Kohlu District and huge quantity of arms and ammunition was seized. The arms seized included antitank and antipersonnel mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). However, no arrest was reported.

The Frontier Corps (FC) on January 2 claimed to have killed four suspected militantsin the Naal area of Khuzdar District, reports Dawn. One FC trooper was also killed during an exchange of fire with suspected militants. FC’s spokesman (Balochistan) said several suspected militants were also arrested during the operation. The forces also seized weapons and arms from the possession of militants during the action. "Forces also demolished the camp of miscreants," the spokesman said. He stated that the FC launched the operation in the aftermath of an attack on a levies check post in the area. The militants had snatched weapons and motorcycles from levies personnel during the attack. "They all belonged to a banned militant group", he added.

The arrests were made in Cox Town of Bengaluru, and Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada District. Announcing the arrests, Police Commissioner MN Reddi said so far no connection has been established between the trio and the December 28 explosion on Church Street. But, Police will investigate further. Reddi said around 5 kilogram of ammonium nitrate, gelatin, electrical circuits, detonators and a walkie-talkie have been seized. "Three men, Syed Ismail Afaq, 34, Saddam Hussein, 35 and Abdus Subur, 24 have been arrested. The first two were arrested from the house in Pulakeshinagar in east Bengaluru and the third person was arrested from Bhatkal town. Abdus Subur, 24 was MBA student in Bhatkal and we are yet to identify the background of the other two arrested men," Reddi added. During the investigation it was found that these men were acting on the instructions of a handler abroad. "We can't confirm the country from where the handler was operating. These men are being interrogated right now and we can't disclose the directions these men were given either, at the point of the investigation," he said. These men have been booked under sections 3.4 and 5 of explosive substances act and sections 10, 13 and 18 of Unlawful Assembly Prevention Act (UAPA) and 120 B and 121 A of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

SFs recovered an M-22 rifle; three grenades, three electric detonators and a cashbook were recovered from Bodosha. Further, SFs arrested an NDFB-IKS linkman, Subungma Basumatary alias Suresh (37), from Biswanath Chariali in Sonitpur District on January 12. L.R. Bishnoi said nearly 50 NDFB-IKS militants have been apprehended and a top leader of the outfit killed in the four BTAD Districts since the operation against the rebel group was intensified. SFs arrested the ‘second lieutenant’ and "chief recruiting officer", Enon Bargoyary alias Erkhang (30) ‘platoon commander of Amteka’, Rinen Basumatary alias Majhi (30), from a forested area in Amteka on the Indo-Bhutan border in Chirang District on January 13. He is also very close to the I.K. Songbijit, ‘commander-in-chief’ G. Bidai and his ‘deputy commander-in-chief’ K. Batha, sources said. Rinen Basumatary had surrendered after the Operation All Clear in 2003 but rejoined the NDFB-IKS two years back, the sources said. Inspector-General of Police (IGP- BTAD) L.R. Bishnoi said an AK-47 rifle, an AK-56 rifle, two 7.65mm pistols, two magazines, a grenade and 219 live ammunitions were seized from them. In addition, SFs arrested six more NDFB-IKS militants from unidentified locations on January 13. The arrested militants were identified as Pranjit Basumatary (19), Kerkho Mushahary (21), Pribol Chumpamari (21), Milan Basumatary (28), Anjalus Basumatary (27) and Pradit Swargoyary (26). A Police official of Tehkal Police Station said the operation was carried out by the Police and SFs around the Bacha Khan Airport and that all Police Stations of the city were told to carry our such operations in their respective areas. He said the operation lasted several hours during which the Police and SFs cordoned off the areas and closed roads and pathways at their entry and exit points. According to spokesman for the Police Riaz Ahmad, a total of 434 suspicious people were arrested in the Province during the last two days. He added that 189 weapons, 5,516 rounds, and a large quantity of ammunition was also recovered. Further, the Police and SFs also forcibly shut down several private hostels in different areas of Peshawar. The action led the students living there blocked the University Road and thus, causing traffic jam for around an hour. Shouting slogans against the Government, the protesters said they didn’t know why their hostels had been closed and that evicting them without prior notice was an injustice. They said they were members of poor families by and large and couldn’t afford to stay in expensive hotels. “We were in mosques to offer Friday prayer when the police showed up and closed their hostels,” a protester said. An official of the Town police station said nine hostels had been closed for illegal operations. The protesters later cleared the road after the police assured them that they would resolve the problem by holding talks with the administrators of hostels.

A Police spokesman while giving details about the operation said that Sopore Police along with 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and 177 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a cordon and search operation in Saidpora village. The militants fired upon the joint search party, triggering an encounter in which two militants were killed. Two Pakistani militants Asadullah of LeT and Ramzan of JeM were killed in the gun battle. Meanwhile, the KP Police, in the ongoing search and strike operation throughout the province against criminals and anti-social elements, have rounded 246 suspects and recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition, reports Daily Times. The number of arrests and recovery of weapons were made during the last two days of the operation, according to a statement from Police spokesman. “Around 79 arms and ammunition of different kind and 1,132 rounds of different bore were recovered during the search operation,” the statement added. The statement further said that during the operation 873 houses and 499 hotels were checked and 38 cases were registered against the violators. Rangers on February 1 claimed to have killed five gangsters in an encounter in Salar Goth area of Malir Town in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports Dawn. They were identified as Akber Maliri, Khalid Lashari, Sheraz Ibrahim alias Comrade of Malir, Gulab Hasan alias Peero, and Yousuf Pathan. Akbar Maliri, was stated to be the main character in the gang warfare in parts of Malir and belonged to the Uzair Baloch group. “The gangsters were the symbol of terror in the city and were involved in numerous murders and other heinous crimes,” claimed the paramilitary force official. However, later in the afternoon, family sources confirmed that Shiraz Comrade is not among those killed. It has been confirmed that the individual earlier mistaken as Shiraz Comrade is also named Shiraz. According to details, the paramilitary force conducted a targeted operation at suspected hideouts located near the Malir riverbed. The suspects started indiscriminate fire on seeing the soldiers, upon which the Rangers returned fire and during the heavy gunfight five gangsters were killed, added the official. According to West Garo Hills Police, a former militant of the Breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B), identified as Silgrak Sangma was arrested on February 4 near the Nehru Park area in Danakgre in West Garo Hills in connection with the abduction. A 9 mm pistol with five live rounds of ammunition was also recovered from his possession. The former militant had come to pick up the ransom in exchange for Rafique, along with two others who managed to escape. Later an amount of INR 500000 meant as ransom was also recovered from the family of the victim. It is unclear if any ransom was paid to the abductors.

Police recovered explosives, detonators, INR 1500000 along with some incriminating documents and a laptop. District Police chief stated that Simseng G Momin was also the General Secretary of Rongjeng unit of Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), a civilian organisation. Another AMEF militant identified as Metronath Marak, residing in proper Chandmari in West Garo Hills District, who was to give shelter to Simseng G Momin was also arrested. A surrendered A'chik Songna An'pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) militant, who was the ‘area commander’ of ‘southern command’, identified as Dimsrang M Sangma alias Nawal was arrested by South Garo Hills District for his alleged involvement in the abduction of State Bank of India (SBI) official SK Mishra. The bank official was abducted on August 5 at Barengapara road in Cherengpara village in West Garo Hills District. The women were protesting the bomb blast, which happened on February 5 which killed one person and the gunfight between Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) and Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland NSCN-IM on February a place between Nambashi and Nambashi Khunou in Ukhrul. RPF stated that the NSCN-IM is never considered as an enemy but it would counter any threat to Manipuri's unity through tough political and military strategies, reports E-pao on February 10. According to details Security Forces (SFs) had launched a search operation in Khori village of Basima area when a group of militants hiding inside a bunker suddenly started firing at them. “As result of the firing, a security official was killed and three others wounded,” said an unnamed FC spokesperson. In retaliatory firing, FC killed at least 15 militants belonging to BLF. SFs recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the site.

The seized items included 2.5 kg gun powder, 11 detonators, 400 grams explosives, 290 empty detonators, two hand grenades, one tiffin bomb, one country made pistol, one pipe bomb, 27 pieces of two-pin plugs, 37 gelatines, two soldering machine, one photo album, one bundle service wire, one pencil cutter besides other items. Dantewada Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamlochan Kashyap said sources had provided a tip off regarding Maoist activities on the hills. After receiving a tip off, a joint team of DF and STF raided the spot when the Maoists opened indiscriminate fire on them. The security personnel retaliated. Finally, the Maoists ran into the deep jungles.

Police sources said a joint team of Policemen and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) force arrested Madakam Deva (20), an alleged member of the CPI-Maoist SGS, and three others during combing operation in the morning. The team seized one directional mine and one landmine besides 100 metres of electric wire, two electrical detonators and one electric battery from them. The others arrested are ‘militia commander’ Madakam Jogaiah (21), ‘militia member’ Podium Andha (19) and ‘militia member’ Ravva Bhadra (20).
