Intelligence sources said on January 3 said that the cache of carbines, rifles and ammunition seized in Nagpur on December 28 was meant for the indigenous Naxalite groups, according to Daily News Analysis (DNA). They also said the cache may have been procured from the Maoist rebels in Nepal and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka. Sources in the security establishment told DNA that the weapons and the ammunition were found manufactured in the United States and Pakistan. All weapons and bullets sported detail and the name of their manufacturing countries, a source said. They also said four persons had been arrested so far in connection with the incident.

He also said two claymore mines, five detonators, an AK-47 and 20 rounds of ammunition were recovered in a jungle close to their houses. According to The Hindu, police in Bangalore (now known as Bengaluru), capital of Karnataka, arrested Imran alias Bilal, a suspected terrorist hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, in the early hours of January 5. A bag containing an AK-47 assault rifle, 300 live rounds of AK-47 ammunition, four AK-47 magazines, five hand grenades, a satellite phone, mobile phones, SIM cards, a Bangalore city map and other documents was seized from him. Director-General of Police, K.R. Srinivasan, informed the media that the police, who were working in co-ordination with Central and State intelligence agencies and anti-terrorist cells, had information that a man carrying arms and ammunition was coming to Bangalore from Hospet in the Bellary district. They intercepted a private bus, in which Imran was traveling, at 5.15 a.m. at Goruguntepalya, an industrial area on the Tumkur Road. Imran had reportedly undergone arms training in Pakistan and was earlier arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. He had studied in a private polytechnic in Bangalore and had been living at Hospet for the last five years. Certain locations such as the airport and the Infosys and Wipro facilities were marked on the map seized from him, sources said.

Unconfirmed sources said that a senior second rung leader Betharaju Narasimha alias Mukku Ravi alias Janardhan of Mallareddygudem in Samsthan Narayanapur mandal was among those killed. Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar said that two to four Maoists might have managed to escape. An AK-47, one carbine, one stengun, one tapancha (country-made revolver), three grenades and kitbags were recovered from the encounter site. Official sources told Daily Excelsior that troops of Rashtriya Rifles (62 Battalion) laid siege to a cluster of houses at Chak-e-Cholan village in Shopian after learning that a group of four terrorists was hiding at the residence of one Assadullah. In the brief gun-battle that followed two terrorists managed to hide but two more were killed. Two AK-56 rifles were recovered from their possession. Officials have tentatively identified the slain militants as Noor Khan alias Muawiya alias Bihari alias Bangladeshi and Abu Vaqas of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). A 35-year-old civilian, identified as Nazir Ahmed Shah, also reportedly died in the cross-firing.

RAB personnel raided the Berbenni village of Harinakunda where the PBCP cadres were holding a secret meeting and in the ensuing encounter Harun was killed. A shutter gun and two rounds of bullet were recovered from the encounter site. RAB sources said that the killed extremist was an extortionist and accused in six cases including three for murders.
