A huge cache of arms and other belongings of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were recovered by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Odisha Police personnel from a Maoist camp in a forested area near Sarkubandha in Malkangiri District of Odisha, on January 1, reports The Times of India. Commenting on the matter, District Superintendent of Police (SP), Akhileswar Singh, said "Around 10 to 12 rebels were present in the camp during our raid. However, spotting the security men, they fled and there was no exchange of fire." At least eight guns, four detonators, four metres of codex wire, a camera flash, one digital electronic multi-meter, cloth, medicines and Maoist literature were seized.

Security Forces (SFs) busted a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp and arrested two Maoists following a gun battle with them in the forest area of Palarmeta in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on January 1, reports The Times of India. The arrested Maoists were identified as Som Sai Usendi (33) and Lakhmu Netam (31). Some other Maoists managed to escape. A 12-bore gun, one air gun and other Maoism related material were recovered from the camping site. On interrogation, the arrested Maoists said the 'commander' of East Bastar Divisional Committee - Kamlesh - was also among the Maoists who fled the camp.

Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) called an indefinite blockade along National Highway (NH)-37, from January 1 midnight, reports Times of India. ZSUM called the blockade in protest against the alleged ‘fake encounter’ of a Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) militant by Assam rifles (AR) troppers.ZSUM demanded that the government punish the guilty personnel under the Zeliangrong customary laws and removal of AR from the Noney area. AR in a statement said that on January 1 morning, around four ZUF militants opened fire at the forces and an encounter ensued, killing one cadre. The troops seized a .22 pistol with four bullets and 14 fired cases of AK-47 from the site. The slain cadre joined Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) in 2006 and obtained training at Buning Camp, it said, adding that he deserted the outfit in 2011 and joined the ZUF and was operating under ‘captain’ Abung of ZUF.

Official sources said that the BSF arrested two cadres of GNLA, identified as Nowel Momin and Arbin Marak, from the Borsora area in West Khasi Hills Districts after receiving reports of GNLA activities in the area. Both originally hail from Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills District. Through information provided by the two cadres, the BSF along with Meghalaya Police carried out a joint operation in Horupukni village in Mawsynram to arrest the third militant, Sukumar R Sangma. Besides the revolvers and demand notes, 19 rounds of ammunition, a mobile phone and Rs 2,050 were recovered from the three militants.

The Shillong Times reports that suspected militants belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) targeted a Government revenue collection point belonging to the Taxation-Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) lobbing a hand grenade that failed to explode during the late evening hours of January 31 in North Garo Hills District. Preliminary reports indicate that the militants lobbed a hand grenade outside the premises of the DMR office in Dainadubi in North Garo Hills shortly after 6:30 pm but the bomb failed to explode. It is strongly suspected that the GNLA may have lobbed the grenade following non-compliance to their extortion demands by the department staff posted in the area. In 2012, suspected Liberation of Achik Elite Force (LAEF) militants had also attacked the same office compound by lobbing a grenade which failed to explode. The LAEF had demanded a large sum of money from the staff manning the check point.

West Bokaro Officer-in-Charge (OC) Balmeeki Singh said that following a tip-off about movement of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and storage of huge cache of explosives for triggering landmines, Police conducted raids in the farmhouse in the dense forest and recovered the explosives. "The explosives are believed to be stored by the Maoists. A bomb disposal squad had to be called in to defuse the explosive," Singh said, adding that Police also recovered 14 detonators, 11 gelatin sticks, 100 metres of wire, which would have been used to connect the explosives for a high intensity explosion. Police also recovered iron tools that would be used in digging out the land for planting landmines.

During a press conference, Commandant Mohmand Rifles, Colonel Mushtaq Ahmad said a joint operation was conducted by Levies, Khasadars and Mohmand Rifles in Shani Khel. The raid was conducted at the house of Ijaz the alleged mastermind of suicide attack in Yakaghund on January 31. Security officials then arrested Dr Ibrahim, on the information provided by Ijaz on February 3. During the raid, officials also arrested Sameer, another relative of Ijaz. Colonel Ahmed revealed that the house was being used as a terrorist hideout, where a cache of arms, ammunitions and explosives were recovered from the basement and the courtyard. A suspected National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) cadre identified as Pouthailung Gonmei (22), son of Dimdailung was slain in an encounter with Assam Rifles (AR) personnel at Tamenglong (District) headquarters on February 5, reports The Sangai Express. Police source said an encounter took place between suspected NSCN-K militants and a combined team of 5 AR and 13 AR personnel at Tamenglong Ward No 3 around 11.30 am. The incident occurred when the AR team launched an operation while the NSCN-K militants were reportedly serving extortion notes in and around the area. The landmines, found close to Sunabeda sanctuary, are suspected to have been planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres. Two hours before the landmines were discovered, several posters put up by the Nuapada division of CPI-Maoist were found in the area, warning people against allowing the minister from entering Nuapada. "We had gone to seize the posters and wanted to know what was written on them. Then some of our men saw wires, which upon scrutiny were found to be connected to landmines. We are yet to recover them as it was difficult to do so in the absence of appropriate devices," said Nuapada Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ashis Singh. Three People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed by a mob of 100 villagers near Darntoli-Sanwariya villages in Gumla District of Jharkhand, on February 15, reports The Times of India. Two country-made pistols, six bullets and three mobile handsets were recovered from them. Two of the deceased have been identified as Parmeshwar Oraon of Dohri village and Prakash Oraon of Dahu-Navatoli village under Sisai Police Station of the same District. Police Inspector Amish Hussein said, "On Thursday [February 14] they reached the village looking for Mana Baraik's daughter who had gone to work in a brick kiln. They threatened Baraik's daughter in-law and also abducted two school going boys of the village including Champa Oraon at gun point." The activities of PLFI men angered the villagers of Sanwariya who held a meeting on February 14 night and in the early morning on February 15 to discuss what to do with them. When the trio was attacked they even talked over the phone with Sukra Oraon, ‘sub-zonal’ commander of PLFI requesting him to rescue them. The dead were suspected to be associated with Oraon's group of PLFI.

A press statement of the Imphal East Superintendant of Police said that a team of the Imphal East District Police commando arrested arms smuggler, identified as Kshetrimayum Umakanta Singh, on February 24 and seized a cache of arms and ammunition from his possession. The weapons include one country-made single barrel rifle, two country-made pistols, one country-made air pistol, one white colour plastic bottle containing thirty three live ammunitions of the country made pistols, one white colour plastic bottle containing self-made gun powder reportedly made from the match sticks and four numbers of semi completed ammunitions along with already fired parts of ammunitions. On further verification, he stated that he has so far made two numbers of country-made pistols with ammunition and one single barrel country-made gun.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Gadchiroli, Ravindra Kadam, said the encounter was an intelligence-based operation. He further said "Two more Naxals are likely to have suffered serious injuries, but their cadres took them away." Press Information Bureau (PIB-Defence Wing), in a statement said that the four killed belonged to the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and Peoples Liberation Army (PLA). At about 3 am, the troops intercepted the armed men trying to infiltrate from across the border and a fierce gun fight ensued in which four militants were killed, said PIB. Plastic explosives were recovered from three youths who were targeting a power station in Assam’s Dhemaji District on Republic Day on January 26, reports The Hindu. The three youths, sped away on their motorcycles, when signalled to stop during a routine check near the Panbari border outpost under Gerukamukh Police Station. They were caught and arrested following a chase. Three packets of plastic explosives, five packets of fuse wire, six fuses and daggers were found in their possession. The youths identified as Pranendra Wari, Nakesh Narzari and Hemkanta Narzari were targeting the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) at the Gerukamukh Dam Site. It was not known to which insurgent outfit they belonged to.

The Police are yet to find out if the explosives had been recently dumped or it was done long ago. Pamphlets, Maoist literature and two diaries were also recovered from the area, said Police. “Two iron pipes inks and markers and apparel of men and women were also recovered from the area,” said Nilratan Ghosh, Officer-in-Charge of Bagmundi Police Station. No arrests have been made so far, but there was information from Special Intelligence Branch to all the District Police Stations that a 12-member squad of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has infiltrated.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Apoorva said, "The surrender of the five rebels is the biggest one in the past five years. They were in civil uniform and had kept their dresses in their backpack." The five cadres were identified as Ishwari Oraon, Binod Oraon, Vikas Yadav, Chhattu Bhuiyan and Chandan Paswan. The recovered weapons included a country made carbine, one 9mm katta, five 315 bore rifles, two 12 bore guns and one revolver along with 38 cartridges. Security Forces (SFs) on January 28 unearthed a Communist Party of India-Maoist’s (CPI-Maoist) dump in Odisha's Rayagada District and recovered three land mines totally weighing 50 kilogram, along with several other items, reports Zee News. District Superintendent of Police (SP), Rajesh Pandit, said, based on a tip-off, a joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Voluntary Forces (DVF) raided the Kharikuti forests within the limits of Gudari Police Station of the same district, and spotted the dump. He further said, "The dump was covered with sand. With the help of a bomb disposal squad, we recovered three land mines, two weighing 20 kg each and another weighing 10 kg." He added, "Among other items recovered from the spot were 44 electronic detonators and a Maoist banner.”
