According to the report, Nagaland experienced a marked improvement in the security situation over the past two years with insurgency-related incidents decreasing by 43 percent in 2016 as compared to 2015 and by 67 percent in 2017. The Committee’s report stated that the improvement “may be attributed to the signing of the Framework Agreement. The report stated that The signing of the final Naga Peace Accord can bring long lasting peace to the State that was once the hotspot of insurgency,” and recommended the continuation of efforts to continue to engage Naga groups.

Nagaland Chief Minister, T.R Zeliang on August 15 said that if the Naga Political Groups could come forward and support the negotiations between the Government of India (GoI) and the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) then it would be a befitting tribute to late Isak Chishi Swu, the ‘chairman’ of NSCN-IM, whose “unfortunate passing away” was condoled by one and all, reports Nagaland Post. Speaking at the 70th Independence Day celebrations at Secretariat Plaza, the Chief Minister said, “Time waits for no one. An early political settlement is in the interest of one and all.” On the occasion, Zeliang also reiterated his appeal to the Khaplang faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) to “eschew the path of violence and return to the ceasefire agreement.”On the law and order situation in the state, Zeliang said overall situation in the state continued to remain peaceful. He, however, said there were some concerns along the Assam-Nagaland border areas, particularly in the areas adjoining Doldoli Reserved forest, which was effectively dealt by the administration and police. National Investigation Agency (NIA) on August 23 recovered nine missing pistols of Police from United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF), ‘chief’ Soson Haokip at Mantri Pukhuri in Imphal West District, reports Assam Tribune. NIA stated that ‘Investigation established that some of the pistols were handed over to one Soson Haokip, chief of UKLF. Accordingly, today searches were conducted at his residential premises at Mantri Pukhuri and at his farmhouse in Palellin Thoubal District and nine 9mm pistols were recovered from his residence. The pistols are believed to be from the same lot that went missing from the police armoury at Imphal. The search is continuing’. At least 56 pistols and 58 magazines went missing from Police armoury. The NIA has so far recovered 14 pistols.At least nine militants have also been arrested in connection with the weapons theft case. NIA has not clarified if the UKLF ‘chief’ has been arrested.

He was produced before a special NIA court in Imphal East and remanded to judicial custody for 15 days. NIA has been probing the case pertaining to theft of 56 pistols and 58 magazines from the Director General (Police) pool armoury located within the premises of 2nd Manipur Rifles Battalion. These weapons went missing between 2016 and early 2017. E-Pao further adds that NIA had raided the residence of MLA YamthongHaokip at Mantripukhri in Imphal West for two consecutive days (on July 30 and 31) in connection with the missing arms case. The court held the four accused - Sanju Bordoloi alias Sibigiri, Bishnu Narzaryalias N. Berema, Ahoy Basumutary alias B. Bujumbura and Nitul Daimaryalias D. Naihab - guilty of opening indiscriminate fire and killing six persons and injuring two others in Santipur village under Rakhakmari police outpost. NIA recovered the money from an individual identified as K Pramodini an employee of Regional Institute of Medical Science s(RIMS). NIA stated that ‘This amount belongs to N Sobita Devi , wife of acussed Dr Mutum Shyamo Singh who was arrested on July 6 for his involvement and supporting proscribed KCP. During the investigation it came to light that the money was handed over to Promodini by wife of the accused for the purpose of concealing terror funds.
