According to Police sources, Several Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres along the Andhra-Odisha border (AOB) are down with coronavirus infection, reports Times of India on May 10. Many in the rank and file of the CPI-Maoist are battling viral symptoms resulting in a lull in Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] activity in Andhra Pradesh. Naxal activity along AOB has gone down significantly in the last four months, as has combing by Security Forces (SFs). Police personnel deployed in the area say that the Maoists are keeping a low profile and have kept themselves confined to Malkangiri District in Odisha. Police have information about a few Naxals of various squads who are affected by coronavirus. Police are ready to provide them proper treatment after admitting them in hospitals and they will be sent to their native villages after recovery, said Anti-Maoist operations Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Satish Kumar.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) couple identified as Budhram alias Jai Singh ‘deputy commander’ of Kiskodo Area Committee along with his wife Sunny surrendered before the Police at District Headquarters in Kanker District of Chhattisgarh, reports HariBhoomi on May 10. The arrested CPI-Maoist couple has reward on their head for INR 7, 00,000. Budhram was active in Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] activities for a long time, carrying a reward of INR 5, 00,000 on his head and involved in several major CPI-Maoist violent incidents. His wife, Sunny, a native of Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh, was active in Kanker District for six years, has a reward of 2,00,000. Budhram has been booked for nearly a dozen and a half offences including attack on Police Party, killing of villagers and arson. His wife is accused of being involved by Naxals in several encounters. The Police provided assistance of INR 10, 000 each to the Maoist couple and welcomed them to the mainstream. The credibility of Naxals is now shrinking and local tribals, who have joined the CPI-Maoist, are trying to get out of the hollow ideology of Naxals. Seeing this, more local youth who have gone with CPI-Maoist should come back and lead a normal life, said Superintendent of Police (SP), MR Ahire

Gajarla Ravi alias Uday, ‘secretary’ of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC), who has been out of the Andhra – Odisha Border (AOB) region for some time, is back to head the movement, reports The Hindu on May 14. Uday had gone into hiding in the safe zones of Chhattisgarh about a year ago as he was suffering from severe diabetes and other health issues. The reports confirms that Uday is back to take stock of the CPI-Maoist in AOB region. CPI-Maoist secretary Uday’s return to AOB is linked to the recent surrender of Muttannagari Jalandhar Reddy alias Krishna, senior member of CPI-Maoist in AOBSZC. Uday has returned to stem the surrenders, revive the movement and, most essentially find a suitable replacement for Krishna. The Security Forces (SFs) consider the return of Uday as a strategic move by the CPI-Maoist 'central committee’ (CC) and Military Commission, said Senior Police Official engaged in anti- Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] operations.

SFs comprising of Khunti Police and 94th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were jointly carrying out an anti- Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] operation on getting intelligence inputs that PLFI cadres are planning some attacks in the forest area bordering Khunti and Gumla Districts of Jharkhand. Some other members of that armed group were identified as Nakul Singh, Bishram Kongari and Wilcon. Topno was along with a dozen PLFI and they decamped in the forest area except Bhengra who was arrested. State Government claimed that its strategy of establishing camps of SFs in Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] affected areas of Bastar has pushed CPI-Maoist cadres to a very limited zone and facilitated development works in the region, reports The New Indian Express on May 25. Most of the camps were set up in inaccessible and remote areas where development remained secluded. However, after setting up these camps, the recent construction of roads is widely visible. Taking on the Naxals in their own style, SFs had decided to establish camps inside dense forests which were earlier unapproachable. These camps have been set up after pursuing a carefully chalked out strategy where each camp can have access to others in time of distress. The establishment of these advanced camps has restricted movement of the CPI-Maoist cadres in these areas. These camps have facilitated construction of roads, bridges, culverts and other infrastructure in the areas dominated by tribals, thereby giving them access to development schemes. Frustrated with the establishment of camps, the Naxals often make futile attempts to target these infrastructure facilities and attempt to create misunderstanding among villagers and trick them to go against the SFs. New avenues of communication and dialogue are getting opened, leading to a constructive partnership between the villagers and the administration, said a statement issued by the Chhattisgarh State Government.

A group of CPI-Maoist cadres raided the nursery, destroyed the saplings by setting them on fire in protest against the Forest department’s initiative to go for massive plantation on the outskirts of the village.
