The Army officials said there were strong indications that senior Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘commanders’, including Maulvi Faqir Mohammad, Maulvi Abdul Wali, Qari Ziaur Rahman and Omar Rahman alias Fateh, were killed or injured in heavy bombing by the Army gunship helicopters in Pindyali tehsil (revenue unit) in Mohmand Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on March 5, according to The News. "We have struck some hideouts of militants in Pindyali, where, according to our intelligence reports, Faqir Mohammad, Omar Khalid, Qari Zia and Fateh from Swat were hiding," an Army official said. He added that they had learnt from their local sources that the militant commanders were present in the hideout during the attack and could have been killed or injured. The officials, however, did not provide further details about the number of the militants and their identity, who were killed or injured in the bombing. Faqir Mohammad is ‘chief’ of Bajaur Taliban militants and ‘deputy leader’ of the TTP. According to officials, Fateh, a dreaded militant ‘commander’ from Swat, whose real name is Omar Rahman, had come to Bajaur along with his fighters when a massive military operation was launched by the Government in 2009. Ziaur Rahman, according to the officials, was earlier operating in the Charmang area of Bajaur and had put tough resistance to Security Forces (SFs) during early days of the military operation launched on August 6, 2008. There were also reports that Qari Ziaur Rahman later went back to Afghanistan on the intervention of Afghan Taliban ‘commanders’, where he was appointed the ‘commander’ for the Marawara area in Kunar province of Afghanistan.

At least 57 persons, including eight soldiers, were killed and more than 90 persons were injured as twin suicide blasts, moments apart from each other, ripped through the Lahore’s RA Bazaar in the cantonment area on March 12, according to Daily Times. The bombers struck during Friday prayers at around 12:50 pm (PST). The first bomber targeted an Army patrol unit near a mosque and the RA Bazaar bus stand. Gunshots were also heard following the attack, adding to the panic in the area. As rescuers rushed to help victims, another bomber struck around two minutes later only a few yards away from the site of the first attack. According to Police sources, initial investigations suggest both bombers were aged between 17 and 20 years. Bomb disposal squad officials said both bombers used suicide vests, weighing 10 kilogrammes each and packed with ball bearings and blades. A private television channel reported that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had claimed responsibility of the bombings while another television channel reported that al Qaeda-linked Sunni terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) had claimed responsibility of the bombings. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shafiq Ahmed said that the bombers were on foot and targeted the patrol unit.

A Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman said that the outfit would stop targeting public and Government places in Punjab if the Provincial Government gave an assurance that the Taliban would be spared from any action, Daily Times reported quoting a private TV channel on March 15. Talking to the channel, Mohmand Agency Ameer Abdul Wali alias Umar Khalid, who is also the deputy of the TTP chief Hakeemullah Mehsud, offered the Punjab Government a conditional end to its activities in the province. The offer comes after a statement by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif where he said, “Musharraf planned a bloodbath of innocent Muslims at the behest of others only to prolong his rule, but the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) opposed his policies and rejected dictation from abroad, thus the Taliban are fighting for the same cause and should not carry out acts of terror in Punjab.”
