The US envoy for Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, on October 13 said that he had seen no evidence that the floods in Pakistan have benefited the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), reports Daily Times. He said this while talking about the Osama Bin Laden humanitarian appeal urging Muslim Governments to help Pakistan’s flood victims in an audiotape made available by the US-based SITE Intelligence Group. “What I see is that the flood was an equal opportunity flood: It hit everybody and a lot of the TTP were dislocated, their communications were disrupted...” Holbrooke said. He added that everybody knows that Osama Bin Laden does not care about people in flooded areas as he has a different set of goals. Holbrooke also urged Europe to help boost aid to the victims of the floods. Richard Holbrooke said that $10 million was required to reconstruct the flood-affected areas of Pakistan.

Senior United States (US) officials are concerned over recent intelligence indicating that the TTP, which orchestrated the failed Times Square bombing, may have successfully placed another operative inside the United States to launch a second attack, The News reported on October 15. Based on the intelligence, authorities believe the TTP would have directed the individual to attempt another Times Square-style operation, but not necessarily in New York City. The TTP has been looking to make up for its previous failure. Authorities believe the subject of the latest intelligence would use “a similar mechanism” and the “same modus operandi” employed by Faisal Shahzad (31) in May, mostly “because it’s easily accessible here”. Authorities are describing the latest threat as “credible but not specific.”

The ‘master trainer’ of suicide bombers and second-in-command of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Qari Hussain Mehsud, is reported to have been killed in the October 4 US drone attack in Mirali town of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Dawn reported on October 15. However, TTP contradicted reports about Qari Hussain’s death and described it as part of a campaign to demoralise its fighters. “Qari Hussain is alive and healthy and will soon contact the media,” one of his associates said over phone. There are two different accounts of the October 4 drone attack. According to one report, Qari Hussain was injured in the attack on a house in Mirali in which eight foreigners, including German militants, were killed. Intelligence sources said those killed included Qari Hussain, known as Ustad-i-Fedayeen (teacher of suicide bomber), and his two guards. Qari Hussain, who was sleeping in the house, was severely injured and taken to Miramshah where doctors amputated one of his legs and he died there, intelligence sources added. According to another report, Qari Hussain was hit in the attack and he died on the spot.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has completed its probe into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and on October 25 held the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) responsible for her death in a gun-and-bomb attack, reported Dawn. The FIA is likely to submit the investigation report before an anti-terrorism court on October 30. The FIA’s investigation team was reluctant to submit the challans before the court because it could not complete its investigation regarding three absconders in the case, Abdur Rehman, Saddam and Faiz Mohammad. The investigation report, however, is now saying that the three absconders were killed in a military operation in tribal areas. Five of the accused, who are all members of TTP, have already been arrested. They are Rafaqat, Hussain, Sher Zaman, Aitzaz Shah and Abdul Rashid. The investigation report has accused slain TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud of masterminding the Bhutto murder.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on October 25 threatened to move into Afghanistan and launch an "unending war" against the Pakistani troops from there, reports Indian Express. A pamphlet purportedly distributed by the "Mujahideen Shura of North Waziristan" in the market in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan Agency, said the TTP asked Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai to provide them shelter if an operation is launched in the region. "If the army starts another operation we will migrate to Afghanistan...But this will lead to an unending war in the region and jihad will continue," the pamphlet said. The pamphlet further said there was a possibility that the Pakistan Government will launch an operation in North Waziristan because it has received a fresh military aid package worth USD two billion from the US. It asked people to be prepared to "cope with the situation". "If the government launches an operation for the sake of money, the people of Waziristan will collect two billion dollars," the pamphlet added. The warning by Taliban comes amidst reports that the US is stepping up pressure on Islamabad to launch a military offensive in the tribal region, which they suspect to be the haven of al Qaeda and Haqqani Network faction of the Taliban.
