At least 40 persons, including tribal elders, Security Force personnel and journalists were killed and another 70 injured on December 6 in twin suicide bombings on a jirga (Tribal council) being held outside the office of the assistant political agent of Mohmand Agency at Ghalanai, the headquarters of Mohmand Agency, in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Daily Times. Among the dead were 12 Government officials and two television journalists –Pervez Khan and Abdul Wahab. Political Agent Zabit Khan is among the injured. According to Mohmand Political Agent Shamsul Islam, a jirga of a peace committee of Alizai and Safi tribes was in progress at the office of Roshan Khan Mehsud to devise a strategy against terrorism in the tribal region when two suicide bombers tried to enter into the premises, but blew themselves up when stopped by security personnel. The ‘chief’ of the Mohmand chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Umer Khalid, claimed responsibility for the attack. “Our two suicide bombers targeted people who were working against the Taliban,” Umer Khalid told AFP by telephone from an unknown location. “Those who will work against us and make lashkars (tribal army) or peace committees will be targeted. Our war is to enforce Sharia and anyone who hinders our way or sides with America will meet the same fate,” Khalid added.

At least 18 persons were killed and 32 others were injured when a suicide bomber blew up a passenger van at a bus stand in Tirah bazaar (market) of Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on December 8, reports Dawn. The blast took place at around 1.50pm (PST) when people were returning home in Lower Orakzai Agency from the bazaar. The explosion damaged 11 other vehicles. The Police media cell said the suicide bomber appeared to be 18 to 20 years old and his jacket contained six kilograms of explosives. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. Usman Ali, a spokesman for the TTP Kohat chapter, told on telephone that “One of our Fidayeen has carried out the attack. I cannot disclose his name at this stage. I can only confirm that my superiors ordered the attack.” Kohat division commissioner Khalid Khan Umerzai said that “We have 197,000 internally displaced people in Kohat. I have sent more than 4,400 families over the past four days to Orakzai Agency, but their presence in such a large number is an imminent threat to security.” Daily Times reports that it was a sectarian attack as most of the passengers belonged to Shia community. The daily quoting Usman Ali, the TTP Kohat chapter spokesperson, reports that “Shias were targeted and more such attacks would follow”. Eyewitness Waheed Ahmed said the bus stand was used mainly by passengers from Shia-dominated areas of Orakzai and Kurram, where sectarian violence has rocked the local population.

A senior Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘leader’ Ibn-e-Amin who commanded one of al Qaeda's military units in north-western Pakistan is said to be among the 32 people killed in December 17's drone attacks in Speen Darang village of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), The Hindu quoting Long War Journal reported on December 20. Though there was no official confirmation, the Long War Journal — which has embedded reporters covering the war on terror in Afghanistan — reported the killing of Ibn-e-Amin in detail. The US drone strike killed Ibn-e-Amin who was reportedly present in the meeting of the Lashkar-e-Islam (LI), a TTP off-shoot in Khyber Agency. Commander Ibn-e-Amin belongs to the TTP Swat chapter. Ibn-e-Amin was ‘second-in-command’ to Mullah Fazlullah, who used to control the Swat Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa till the Army regained ground after a military operation 2009. Ibn-e-Amin was also commander of the Tora Bora Brigade, one of the six formations in al Qaeda's Shadow Army and was legendary for his brutality.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants attacked five checkpoints in the Mohmand Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) after December 23 midnight, sparking a clash which left 11 paramilitary soldiers and 24 militants dead, reports Dawn. Officials sources said that at least 150 militants launched coordinated attacks on the five checkpoints — three in Safi tehsil (revenue unit) and two in Baizai — at about 1.30am (PST). Political agent Amjad Ali Khan said on December 24 that the bodies of seven militants had been found. But the TTP denied the claim and said they had lost only two men in the clash which followed the midnight attack. Sajjad Mohmand, a spokesman for the TTP Mohmand chapter, claimed that two soldiers had been captured. "We have killed 12 soldiers and occupied a checkpost," TTP spokesman Sajjad Mohmand added. However, Security officials rejected the TTP’s claim of capturing two paramilitary soldiers and said that no-one was missing.
