The South Waziristan Agency has been cleared of the Taliban (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, TTP) and there are no more insurgent hideouts in the tribal region, a private television channel quoted Pakistan Army’s operations commander in South Waziristan, Major-General Nawaz Khan, as saying on July 1, reports Daily Times. Briefing the media at the Rata Kullachi Stadium in Dera Ismail Khan, the operations commander said that foreign forces were responsible for the situation that had developed in the region, adding that the Pakistan Army had also arrested foreigners and seized foreign-made arms and ammunition from their possession. After the successful completion of Operation Rah-e-Nijat (Path to Salvation), the political administration of the region was responsibly fulfilling its duties, he said. The operations commander also surveyed the ongoing activities at a registration camp for the internally displaced persons (IDPs), and said that the process of the IDPs repatriation was progressing along the right track.

Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif on July 3 said his party is ready to convene a national conference to address the root causes of terrorism and to chalk out a national policy to deal with the threat, reports Daily Times. Addressing a press conference at his residence in Raiwind, Nawaz said that if the Government called such a conference, the PML-N would ensure its active participation in the event. Nawaz urged the Government not to “look towards” the US to decide the country’s fate and instead take the initiative in negotiating with the Taliban (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, TTP). “They (the US) are holding talks with the Taliban, so Islamabad should adopt the same policy at local level,” he said. He pointed out that terrorism was directly linked to the Government’s foreign policy. He also called for the implementation of the suggestions of the National Assembly’s committee on national security.

The Taliban (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, TTP) will soon launch their own ‘media regulatory authority’ to monitor TV channels, radio stations and newspapers to “stop propaganda” against Islam, a TTP spokesman said on July 3, reports Daily Times. “We are working on a Taliban (TTP) media regulatory authority, which should be operational in the next few days. Its main objective is to monitor the media closely, so that no false statement regarding Islam and its ideologies is made, nor any disputed matter is discussed in the media,” Muhammad Omar, a self-proclaimed TTP spokesman said in a statement emailed to media offices. He said, “If anyone tries to carry out such practices, he or she will be fined first. If he or she does not refrain from such practices, then the person will be executed under a suo motu action.” More details would be given soon, Omar added.

Faisal Shehzad, the man arrested for plotting car bombing in New York’s Times Square appeared in a video on Al-Arabiya television on July 14 in which he said he planned to attack the United States, reports The News. “This attack on the United States will be a revenge for all the Mujahideen... and oppressed Muslims, including ... Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (the late leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq), î said Faisal Shahzad”. The recording, whose authenticity could not immediately be confirmed, was made in English and had an Arabic voiceover. “I will carry this attack on their behalf, and I hope that it will please Muslims,” Faisal Shahzad said in the first video linking him to the abortive May 1 bomb plot and al-Qaeda. “With Jihad (holy war), the basis of Islam can be enforced and the word of Allah and his religion will prevail,” he said. “Abandoning Jihad destroys the religion and puts Muslims in an insulting position as they get robbed of land and authority,” he added. Dressed in the attire of Afghan fighters with a black turban and a trimmed beard, Shahzad appeared in a video that carried the “Umar Media” brand, with an AK-47 rifle apparently added by video editing to his left. “Eight years have passed since the war in Afghanistan. You will see that the Muslims’ war has just started, and we will tell you how Islam will spread all over the world,” he said, reading at some point from a book. Dubai-based Al-Arabiya said the video was 40-minutes long. It said Shahzad appeared in the video with Faqir Mohammed, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader in Bajaur Agency, but such footage was not aired.

The footage revealed Fazalullah, saying that he had sent the four suicide bombers, who attacked Timer Gara some time ago. Pakistan Army and the The Awami National Party (ANP) were still on their hit list, and the strength of the TTP had not been lessened, the channel reported. According to sources, it was the first footage, which had been released by Fazalullah himself. The footage showed the injured leg of the TTP leader, due to which he was walking slowly, which confirmed the news that he received a bullet in his leg.

According to a research carried out by the BBC Urdu service, nearly 2,500 people have been killed as a result of US drones and militant attacks since January 2009, reports Daily Times. The research shows how Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) strongholds in the border area close to Afghanistan have been targeted by US drone aircraft, while, at the same time, TTP have carried out attacks across Pakistan. Missile attacks by US drones in the Tribal Areas have more than tripled under the Obama administration, research by the BBC Urdu service shows. Compared with 25 drone strikes between January 2008 and January 2009, there were at least 87 such attacks between President Barack Obama taking office on January 20, 2009 and the end of June 2010. More than 700 people have been killed in such attacks under Obama, compared with slightly fewer than 200 from under his predecessor, George W Bush. The TTP backlash over the same period has been even more violent. Terrorists have struck more than 140 times in various locations, killing more than 1,700 people and injuring hundreds more, the BBC research shows. Over the same 18-month period, many more than 2,500 people have died in offensives by the Pakistani Army and fighting between troops and the TTP.

Eight persons, including three Policemen and two children, were killed, while 23 others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the house of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain in the Khan Sher Garhi area of Peshawar on July 26, according to Daily Times. At the time of the attack, a number of people were gathered in and outside the Awami National Party (ANP) leader’s house to condole the death of his son, Rashid, who was gunned down by militants on July 24. “A suicide bomber blew himself up when a Police constable tried to stop him from entering the residence of the minister,” Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Liaquat Ali said. Eyewitnesses, who had come to offer condolences, said that the suicide bomber, aged between 20 and 22, was wearing black clothes and detonated the explosives when Police tried to stop him from entering Iftikhar’s house. Police said 10 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the attack. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying their goal was to kill Iftikhar Hussain because his political party “is allied with the United States”. “This is just the beginning,” Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone. “We will carry out more attacks against the party. We will destroy their roots,” he said.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claims it has organised 3,000 terrorists for its declared battle against India, the TTP spokesperson tells Tahir Ali in Islamabad on July 26, reports Rediff. TTP declared that it is providing training to terrorists to launch an attack on India. The TTP spokesperson Azam Tariq told this correspondent in a telephone interview that the TTP has vowed to capture "Hindustan". "India is our Jageer (domain)," Tariq said, "and we will attack to take possession of it. We are training lots of fighters and suicide bombers who will be used for this purpose." He added the TTP would fight a "decisive' battle" in India before proceeding towards the Middle East, presumably to evict Israel from that region. After taking control of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the TTP spokesperson said the Taliban would move towards India. Tariq said Islamic scriptures have predicted a victory over "non-believers". "For us, whether they are Hindus or Jews, they all are the same. Soon, we will teach India a lesson. India's defeat at the hands of the Mujahideen (holy warriors) is written in our religious books," he boasted. Criticising relations between Pakistan and the United States, Tariq said, "We are not against Pakistan, but we don't like its pro-American policies; we will target their security forces, the secular leaders and other sensitive installations until the government does not change its anti-Islamic policies."

At least 10 persons were killed and their houses set ablaze in sectarian violence in Kurram Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on July 29, reports Daily Times. Local residents said that men of the Shia sect carried out the attack. The incident occurred in the Sanghbakht village inhabited by the Mengal tribe near the Afghanistan border. Mengal tribesmen are predominantly Sunni and live on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. "They (attackers) first evicted the residents from their homes, ransacked them and killed 10 persons on the spot," the residents said adding that the attack could be retaliation for the attack on a convoy of Shias on July 16 in which 18 persons were killed. Parachinar and other towns of Kurram had been witnessing sectarian violence since a long time and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) used the tense relations between Sunnis and Shias to strengthen their presence in the area. Local residents said that four women and two children were missing in the aftermath of the attack.

US Vice-President Joe Biden said in an interview aired on July 29 that Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was "changing" its behaviour towards Afghanistan, reports Dawn. Biden downplayed leaked documents which suggested that between 2004 and 2009, elements of ISI, armed, trained and financed the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) despite Islamabad’s anti-terror alliance with Washington. "I’m getting very close to what I shouldn’t be talking about in terms of classification," said Biden. "But what was talked about in those leaks were the intelligence community within the ISI. That is the sort of the CIA of Pakistan. That has been a problem in the past. It is a problem we’re dealing with and is changing."
