Two policemen were killed and 12 others, including six policemen, were injured in a commando-style suicide attack on a Police headquarters in the Swabi District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on November 1, reports Daily Times. Mardan DIG Abdullah Khan said four militants took part in the attack. “They first opened fire at the cops killing one and injuring others. Then the attackers tried to enter the Police headquarters, and at its main entrance one bomber blew himself up,” Abdullah Khan was quoted as saying. Eyewitnesses said the second bomber was killed after police chased him. An office building was damaged by the explosion, Abdullah Khan added. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. TTP spokesman Azam Tariq told a foreign news agency in a telephone call from an undisclosed location that TTP carried out the attack, saying it was in retaliation for a stepped-up US drone strike campaign.

Militant attacks on two mosques, one at Juma congregation in Darra Adamkhel and the other at Isha prayers in Badbher near Peshawar, left at least 68 persons dead and another 70 injured on November 5, reports Dawn. At least 65 people, 18 children among them, were killed and 70 injured in a suicide attack on the Friday congregation in the mosque in Darra Adamkhel area of the Kohat Frontier Region. The mosque is about one kilometre from the main camp of Security Forces (SFs) set up in a degree college. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) denied having any hand in the attack and, instead, blamed foreign agents fighting SFs in tribal areas. Security officials in Peshawar said they suspected that the militants of Tariq Afridi fraction of TTP carried out the attack. Their target, the officials said, was the Momin Afridi fraction which had raised a lashkar (tribal militia) and supported SFs’ action against militants loyal to Tariq Afridi.

At least 20 persons, including Frontier Constabulary (FC) officials and Policemen, were killed and over 100 injured when an explosive-laden truck blew up inside the head office of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), which is located inside the main red zone of Karachi in Sindh, on the night of November 11, reported Daily Times. A truck loaded with explosives managed to penetrate the security checkpoints of the CID operation’s office after an intense exchange of fire. Later, they threw grenades inside the CID building, killing the security guards deployed at the main gate. According to bomb disposal squad (BDS) experts around 1,000 kilograms of explosive was used in the blast filling the entire area with smoke. Though the attack is suspected to be in reaction to the arrest of the militants affiliated with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) that the CID made on November 10, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) also claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) have planned to carry out suicide attacks in Islamabad and other parts of the country, Daily Times quoting Intelligence reports on November 12. According to intelligence information, TTP ‘commander’ Qari Momin sent four suicide bombers to attack Eid congregations in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad. The LeJ is also likely to target Eid congregations, mosques, Imambargahs (Shia place of worship), shrines, Police and Army establishments and places of worship belonging to minorities. The intelligence and law enforcement agencies have also received threats through fax by the TTP. An intelligence report stated that a terrorist, Ibrar, assigned the task of suicide bombings to his accomplices across the country. Reports further revealed that the terrorists had sent an explosive-laden vehicle from Miranshah of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to the high value targets in Punjab.

The United States should use drones to target Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) hideouts if Pakistan does not destroy them, says US bipartisan task force on November 13, reports Dawn. In a report to the Barack Obama administration, the task force warns that another Mumbai-like attack could lead to a full-fledged war between India and Pakistan. “What we are suggesting is that we include LeT in this target list, because if the Pakistanis aren’t willing to see this as a threat and indeed an existential threat to them, then we see it that way, and we are going to prosecute it,” Richard Armitage, former deputy Secretary of State said. Richard Armitage, while talking to the media after the release of the task force’s report on Pakistan and Afghanistan, urged Islamabad to realise that the Haqqani network also posed an existential threat to the Pakistani state. “I would hope they would see the Haqqani network in the same way they see Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), that this is ultimately a threat to them as well,” said Richard Armitage. “On Lashkar-e-Taiba, they have to see this as something that could, in a single stroke, cause war between India and Pakistan, something that I think would delight Al Qaeda no end,” he observed. “And why do I say this? LeT is trouble. As I have already indicated, if they have one more strike, another Mumbai-type attack, I do not think the Indian government can be held back,” he added further.
