Two Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) militants were killed in an encounter with the Security Forces (SFs) in Sheikh Nala area of the Matani Police Station in Peshawar (Peshawar District), the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on July 4, reports The Express Tribune. An Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) was killed and one Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel was also injured in the encounter with the militants. A security official said that one of the slain militants was the brother of wanted militant ‘commander’ Jangrez, who was blamed in the Badhaber explosion case in which killed 18 persons were killed on June 30. “Roohul Amin was involved in the attacks in and around the Peshawar city,” said the official. The other militant was identified as Yousuf.

An offshoot group associated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has come to the fore to avenge the killings in Waziristan by drone attacks. Hitherto known as “Ansarul Mujahideen”, the group has claimed responsibility for attack on Bovia Check post and vowed to make life difficult for the United States and its friends in return for drone attacks. In a statement issued to media on July 7 from an undisclosed location, group ‘spokesman’ Abu Baseer said some ‘so called’ English speaking journalists were putting their lives at risk by supporting drone attacks. The spokesman said their group had been formed in the wake of drone attacks in North and South Waziristan as they consider it a shameful act by remaining silent on drone attacks. He claimed that there were hundreds of Mujahideen who have entered into the battle field to avenge the missile attacks by pilotless US drones. Abu Baseer said the US and its friends must know that we have hundreds of suicide Fidayeen and they would make life difficult for them. He said they respect independent journalists but nowadays majority of channels and journalists were supporting US in return for a few dollars. He said the journalists must use their pen for oppressed Muslims. He said attacks on Bovia, Asia and Dum Deel check posts were a beginning and their major attacks would surprise the world.

Pakistan had reached an understanding with the United States (US) on drone strikes targeting militants, according to leaked remarks from a former Intelligence Chief Ahmad Shuja Pasha, reported Daily Times on July 10 (today). Ahmed Shuja Pasha, who headed Pakistan’s premier Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Agency at the time of bin Laden’s killing in 2011, told investigators that drone strikes had their uses. “The Director General said there were no written agreements. There was a political understanding,” the report said. The Americans had been asked to stop drone strikes because they caused civilian casualties, but “it was easier to say no to them in the beginning, but ‘now it was more difficult’ to do so,” it quoted the former ISI chief as saying. “Admittedly the drone attacks had their utility, but they represented a breach of national sovereignty. They were legal according to American law but illegal according to international law,” the report quoted the ISI chief as saying. Pakistan publicly condemns US missile attacks on Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and al Qaeda operatives as a violation of its sovereignty, but the new revelations are the latest sign of double-dealing in private. The revelations come in findings of a Pakistani investigation into how al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden evaded detection for nearly a decade, which were published by the Al-Jazeera news network.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on July 9 sacked their ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan for making remarks that angered their Afghan allies, reports The News. The TTP announced the dismissal of Ehsanullah Ehsan - an outspoken and prominent figure close to TTP's top brass - in a pamphlet distributed by militants in North Waziristan Agency on the Afghan border. "He has made comments that have raised the danger of divisions between the TTP and the Afghan Taliban," the pamphlet said. "The Taliban are our foundation and (Afghan Taliban leader) Mullah Omar is our supreme leader. That is why, from today, Ehsanullah Ehsan is no longer our spokesman." Ehsan was replaced by Sheikh Maqbool, a man who is considered close to the Afghan Taliban and has spent much of his time since 2007 in Afghanistan. But Ehsan’s sacking could also signal yet another chink in the armour of the TTP itself, which last month lost its second-in-command, Waliur Rehman, in a US drone strike in North Waziristan Agency.

Progress of the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) probe into former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s murder stands frozen as Police refuse to produce the key accused, former General (retired) Pervez Musharraf, to court in view of security threats, and nominated witnesses are shying away from the case, reported The Express Tribune. Amidst all these challenges, a hearing has been scheduled at the Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court-1 for July 9 (today). The FIA had listed six ‘very strong witnesses’ against Musharraf – all of whom are evading the court. If any of them is forced to see a judge, he/she will not testify against the former General, they informed authorities. The key witness, American journalist Mark Siegel, has flatly refused to fly to Pakistan for court proceedings. Instead, he suggested that if the court desired evidence from him, ‘it’ should come to the United States (US). Another American journalist, Ron Sexton, has also declined to visit Pakistan to testify. Similarly, witnesses such as former Director General of the Intelligence Bureau Brigadier (retired) Ejaz Shah, former spokesperson of the Foreign Office Brigadier (retired) Javed Iqbal Cheema and former Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah, all of whom have been nominated in the challan, refuse to testify against their former boss General Pervez Musharraf. Former DIG Saud Aziz, who rounded up five accused in the case, was himself accused of murder by the FIA during the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Government. The five accused had confessed to their involvement in the former Prime Minister’s murder on the instructions of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander Baitullah Mehsud. Meanwhile, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has refused himself from the bench hearing an appeal against post-arrest bail granted to General Pervez Musharraf by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a case relating to detention of judges after the proclamation of emergency on November 3, 2007, reports Dawn. “I shall not hear the plea for cancelling the bail granted by the High Court,” the Chief Justice said and directed the Supreme Court’s office to send the case filed by advocate Aslam Ghumman to another bench. The court office had placed the appeal before a bench headed by the Chief Justice who had also remained in detention until his reinstatement in March 2009. On June 11, the IHC had granted bail to the former President on a surety bond of PKR 500,000. A division bench of the High Court held that there was no record to determine Musharraf’s role in placing over 60 judges in detention. Ghumman filed the petition in the Apex Court, challenging the IHC’s order of granting bail to Musharraf after removing terrorism from the charge-sheet and requesting the Apex Court to set aside the decision and order his arrest. He argued that the IHC order was illegal, unjust and arbitrary and had resulted in grave miscarriage of justice because the High Court had not followed the dictum of the Supreme Court in its true prospective.

A 'court' on July 10 stayed the removal of Ehsanullah Ehsan as ‘central spokesman’ of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for another 45 days, says a signed order by the 'court' in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) bordering Afghanistan, reports Dawn. The Dar-ul Qaza court of the TTP has issued a ‘stay order’ against the decision until members of the ‘central council’ appear for a hearing, says the leaflet, a copy of which is available with Dawn. The July 10 ‘order’ is one of a series of signs of growing divisions within the TTP, an umbrella group of different militant factions. The document also shows the existence of parallel ‘militant courts' operating in FATA. On July 9, a pamphlet by the TTP central council (Shura) had announced the removal of Ehsan — a prominent figure close to the TTP’s top brass — for making remarks that angered the Afghan Taliban and raised the danger of divisions between the two militant organisations.

Malala Yusufzai, in a speech to the United Nations on her first public appearance since being shot at and injured by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on October 12, 2012, vowed on July 12 not to be silenced by terrorists, reports Daily Times. “They thought that the bullet would silence us, but they failed. The terrorists thought that they would change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in my life, except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born,” Malala said on her 16th birthday in a presentation in which she called for books and pens to be used as weapons. She stated, “I want education for the sons and daughters of the Taliban and all the terrorists and extremists. I do not even hate the talib who shot me. Even if there is a gun in my hand and he stands in front of me I would not shoot him.”

Quoting the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), The News on July 12 reported that Tehreek-e- Taliban Pakistan (TTP) have set up a base in Syria to assess "the needs of the jihad". Citing a Taliban operative, the BBC reported that the base was set up with the assistance of ex-Afghan fighters of Middle Eastern origin who have moved to Syria in recent years. At least 12 experts in warfare and information technology had gone to Syria in the last two months, the Taliban operative told BBC. The Pakistani Government has not yet commented on the issue.

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Police claimed to have arrested a TTP militant, identified as Kochi Khan, allegedly involved in the assassination of Awami National Party’s (ANP) candidate Sadiq Zaman for the May 2013 National Assembly Elections and a few Policemen, from Gulshan-e-Sikanderabad area of Kiamari Town, reported Dawn. CID SSP Raja Umar Khattab said that the suspect, originally hailing from Mohmand Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), belonged to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). “Khan along with his accomplices Ajab Gul and Mushtaq killed ANP candidate Sadiq Zaman and his son Aimal Khattak four months ago when they were coming out of a mosque after offering Friday prayers in Bilal Colony of Korangi Town,” said SSP Khattab. The suspect also confessed to his involvement in the killings of four policemen in different parts of the city, he added.

Bans by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leaders and a lack of access to certain areas have made it near impossible to make the country polio-free, The Express Tribune reported on July 15. Information shared with The Express Tribune reflects 17 of 20 or 85% of polio cases reported across the country were due to the above-mentioned reasons, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Most of these reasons are interrelated. Between conspiracies about foreign interests aiming to sterilise men to the Taliban conditioning the lifting of the ban with the end of drone strikes, areas become riskier for polio teams and parents become more difficult to convince. Awareness campaigns to remove misconceptions regarding the vaccine resulted in polio workers being gunned down on the second day of a nationwide anti-polio campaign in December 2012. The National Research and Development Foundation (NRDF) and UNICEF suspended their polio awareness drive in KP and FATA following the incidents.

Mullah Nazir faction of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) banned the use of "tight or thin" clothes both for men and women in the holy month of Ramzan and warned of one month imprisonment for not fasting in South Waziristan Agency (SWA), reports Times of India. The Ramzan code of conduct guidelines was issued in a pamphlet after the Mullah Nazir Taliban Group held a Shura (council) meeting in Wana headquarters of SWA. Tight or thin clothes have been banned for both men and women during the holy month, the pamphlet stated. "We warn the shopkeepers and tailors with severe punishments (for violating the rule). Fine up to PKR 50,000 would be imposed on those found guilty," the pamphlet read.

He added that he had received three similar phone calls so far. Abbasi had received a threat letter along with a USB containing the video and pictures of the suspected TTP militants. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on July 16 rejected the report that they were sending cadres to Syria, saying some have gone there independently but the movement’s focus remained in Pakistan, reports Daily Times. TTP sources said some militants, mainly Arabs and Central Asians, had gone to fight the forces of President Bashar al Assad, but a senior leader dismissed reports of them setting up camps in Syria. Some media reports say scores of TTP militants are among them and they have set up camps in Syria. A senior ‘commander’ who sits on the Shura (council) of the TTP said that there was no tactical shift and no decision had been made to send forces to Syria. “There is no reality in these reports, we have far better targets in the region, NATO troops headed by the Americans are present in Afghanistan,” he said on condition of anonymity. “We are already in a war with Pakistani troops. We support the mujahedeen’s struggle in Syria but in our opinion, we have a lot more to do here in Pakistan and Afghanistan.” Since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011, foreign jihadists have flocked to Syria, where disparate rebel groups are seeking his downfall.

In an open letter released on July 17 the senior ‘commander’ of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Adnan Rasheed, wrote to Malala Yusufzai, accusing her of “smearing” them and urging her to return home and join a madrassa, reports Daily Times. Adnan Rasheed, who is a former air force member turned TTP cadre, said he personally wished the attack had not happened, but accused her of running a “smearing campaign” against the militants. “It is amazing that you are shouting for education, you and the United Nations Organisation (UNO) is pretending that you were shot due to education, although this is not the reason...not the education but your propaganda was the issue,” Rasheed wrote, adding, “What you are doing now, you are using your tongue on the behest of others.” The letter, written in English, was sent to reporters in northwest Pakistan and its authenticity confirmed to AFP by a senior Taliban cadre who is a close associate of Rasheed. He accused Malala of seeking to promote an education system begun by the British colonialists to produce “Asians in blood but English in taste” and said students should study Islam and not what it called the “satanic or secular curriculum”. “I advise you to come back home, adopt the Islamic and Pashtun culture, join any female Islamic madrassa near your home town, study and learn the book of Allah, use your pen for Islam and plight of Muslim ummah (community),” Rasheed wrote.

The investigating authorities of Dera Ismail Khan jailbreak have concluded that the brazen assault was masterminded by Adnan Rasheed, the mastermind of an assassination attempt on Pervez Musharraf, who himself was freed in a jailbreak operation conducted on April 15, 2012, reports The News. The investigating authorities further believe that the prison attackers were led by Adnan Rasheed being the chief operational commander of a special unit of fidayeen (suicide attackers) belonging to the TTP and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU). Both the Waziristan-based jehadi groups have already joined hands to form the jehadi unit called “Ansar Al Aseer” (supporters of prisoners) whose prime aim is to secure freedom for the imprisoned jihadis by carrying out jailbreak operations across Pakistan. Further, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government on July 31 formed a high-level investigative committee to probe the Dera Ismail Khan Jailbreak, reports Dawn. The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) media cell, which has circulated the government orders, said the committee, headed by senior member of Board of Revenue Waqar Ayub, will also comprise Special Secretary Home and Tribal Affairs Syed Alamgir Shah, Additional Inspector General (Special Branch) KP Syed Akhtar Ali Shah and the nominee of 11 Corps Headquarters Peshawar. Meanwhile, Dawn has obtained the list of 253 freed prisoners compiled by the jail authorities submitted to the Government. Earlier, different media sources speculated an estimated 250 prisoners escaped during the jail break.
