The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led coalition Government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is about to formally demand that the centre should withdraw army from Swat and Malakand in a phased manner because it believes it to be an important step for establishing peace in the province and adjacent tribal areas, reports Dawn. The Amir (chief) of the KP chapter of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), Mohammad Ibrahim, disclosed on June 9 that Chief Minister Pervez Khattak had already raised the issue during a recent meeting with Peshawar’s Corps Commander Lt-Gen Khalid Rabbani. Talking to Dawn, Ibrahim, whose party is a coalition partner with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) in the province, said the provincial Government was preparing a plan to hold talks with all stakeholders, including the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in an effort to restore peace in the country. “The PTI, JI, Qaumi Watan Party and Awami Jamhoori Ittehad, all coalition partners in the KP government, have decided to first consult all provincial political and religious parties and tribal elders about the peace process,” he said.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on June 16 said they will not change their decision of withdrawing an offer of peace talks to the Government because they are still mourning the killing of their Deputy ‘chief’, Waliur Rehman, in a United State (US) drone strike, reports The Times of India. "We are still in a state of shock at the martyrdom of our deputy chief and there is no change in our decision of not talking to the government," TTP spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan said."We had offered dialogue and wanted to talk to everyone, but the political government has no power and the powerful establishment has never shown seriousness for a peace dialogue," Ihsan said on phone from an undisclosed location. The TTP withdrew its offer of dialogue with the new Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Government a day after Ihsan confirmed on May 30 that Rehman was killed with six other militants in a US drone strike in North Waziristan Agency (FATA). At the time, Ihsan had alleged Pakistan was cooperating with the US in drone attacks, an allegation he reiterated when he was asked if the TTP is willing to talk to the PML-N Government.

Separately, seven militants were killed and several others were injured in a clash between two militant groups in Bosti Khel area Darra Adam Khel town of Kohat District, reports Dawn. The Bosti Khel area of Darra Adam Khel is considered to be a stronghold of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and Arif Afridi, a cousin of Tariq Afridi, the Taliban leader in Khyber Agency (FATA) and Darra Adamkhel, controls it. He is said to be a close aide of TTP chief Hakeemullah Mehsud. The sources said the slain terrorists could not be identified because the two groups took away their bodies.

10 foreign tourists-cum-mountaineer were among 11 persons killed on June 23, when militants wearing paramilitary uniforms attacked a base camp of Nanga Parbat mountain range in Bonar area of Diamer District in Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), The Nation reports. One Pakistani woman guide was also killed in the incident. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesperson’ Ehsanullah Ehsan while claiming the responsibility said that killing was revenge against the United States’ (US) drone attacks and killing of TTP ‘deputy chief’ Waliur Rehman Mehsud. He also revealed that a new faction of the outfit, named Junud-e-Hafsa, carried out the attack. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on June 25 claimed that the Government of Pakistan does not have the authority to hold talks, reports Daily Times. TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan has said that if the group sees that the elected Government is able to take a stand against the country’s intelligence agencies, only then will the option of talks be considered. Commenting on the offer to resume peace talks with the newly elected Pakistani government led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the spokesman said the TTP is closely monitoring the policies and activities of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and PML-N in the Centre. He also said that the TTP supports peace negotiations between the US and the Afghan Taliban, a week after the Afghan insurgent leaders opened a political office in Qatar. Ehsanullah Ehsan said that the organisation had vowed allegiance to Mullah Omar and that any decision taken by the Afghan Taliban chief would be accepted. "We accept all decisions taken by Afghan Taliban as we are their part,” he claimed. In a separate interview with Dawn, Ehsan said that situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan are totally different from each other and administratively, the US-Taliban talks would not affect the situation of TTP in Pakistan. He also said that the TTP leadership considers Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Muhammad Omar as their supreme commander and has taken an oath of jihad on his hand. “TTP fighters are always ready to obey Omar’s commands,” he said. Ehsan accused the media of doing negative propaganda against the Taliban to spread mistrust among its members. He said that some groups in the guise of Afghan Taliban tried to attack the TTP but the interference of Afghan Taliban on the demand of TTP foiled the conspiracy against the latter.

A bomb attack targeting a Sindh High Court judge on June 26 killed at least 10 persons, including two Rangers personnel, six Policemen and the driver of the judge’s car, and injured 15 others, including the judge, near Burns Road in Karachi (Karachi District), the provincial capital of Sindh, reports Daily Times. The intended target of the terrorists was senior Sindh High Court judge Justice Maqbool Baqar, who was on his way to the court along with an escort of four Rangers personnel on two motorbikes and two Police vehicles. The convoy was near Burns Road when the powerful bomb exploded. However, Justice Baqar did not suffer any major wound. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed the responsibility of the attack, saying they detonated the bomb remotely. “We attacked the judge in Karachi as he was taking decisions against Shariah and he was harmful for Mujahideen,’’ he said. Ehsan further said that the judge was targeted for what he said were “anti-Taliban and anti-Mujahideen decisions”, and that the group would continue to target judiciary.

Welcoming the initiation of Doha peace process, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on June 26 reiterated his desire that the Pakistan Government should also hold talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to bring peace and stability in the region, reports Dawn. “The use of force does not work all the time and in all situations,” said the JUI-F chief. Answering a question, the JUI-F chief agreed that those who did not want to be part of the negotiations should be dealt with sternly, but at the same time called for finding out the forces obstructing talks when the national leadership had already decided and committed to holding talks with the TTP.

Clashes between the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups erupted in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region as hundreds of fighters attacked TTP bases situated in Kunar and Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, reports Dawn. TTP sources said hundreds of militants comprising Lashkar-i-Toiba (LeT), Ansarul Islam (AI), 'Mohmand force' and other local militias (Lashkars) were part of a joint attack on Pakistani Taliban positions in Afghanistan. Earlier, reports had said that the Afghan Taliban were also backing the attacking groups but later the TTP requested Afghan Taliban ‘chief’ Mullah Omar to intervene and as a result the clash was averted. Rival groups have now initiated another attack of which the Afghan Taliban are not a part, said TTP ‘commander’. Mukarram Khurasani, ‘spokesman’ for the TTP's Mohmand chapter ‘chief’ Omar Khalid, told Dawn that hundreds of militants had attacked the TTP positions in Shongrai and the bordering village of Jarobi Darra. Khurasani also accused LeT ‘commander’ Haji Abdul Rahim of leading the attackers. The Shah Khalid group is also supporting the attack. Most of the TTP hideouts targeted belong to Swat TTP ‘chief’ Mullah Fazlullah and Mohmand TTP led by Umar Khalid Khurasani. The TTP's Mohmand chapter ‘chief’ also claimed that the attack had been repulsed and said that one attacker was killed while three were injured.

Addressing a convention of the party, Imran Khan said there are different forms of terrorism in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi and Balochistan, which will have to be dealt with through different means. He said he has written a letter to the Prime Minister for the formulation of a national policy in consultation with political and military leadership to deal with terrorism. He said terrorism could not be overcome in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa unless the prime minister, the chief of army staff and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government sit together and arrive at a consensus formula. They will have to hold dialogue with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) at political level, he added.
