The Frontier Police (FP) in Peshawar, on March 19, reported that they had arrested four activists of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) on March 12 for alleged involvement in the killing of Anwar Ali Akhunzada, the Central General Secretary of Tehreek-e-Jaferia Pakistan (TJP) on November 23, 2000. Police sources reported that Akhunzada was assassinated on the instructions of LeJ leader Riaz Basra. Sources also said that the TJP leader's assassination was meant to revenge the murder of a Basra's close associate Noor Gul, who was killed in an encounter in Lahore. The arrested activists also confessed to the involvement of LeJ in the killing of a senior police officer Farooq Haider in Peshawar in October 1999. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the site of the arrest.

According to a press release issued by the police in Multan, on March 21, a terrorist of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), who was arrested recently, had confessed to his involvement in several incidents of sectarian killings and arms trafficking in Punjab, Pakistan. He is reported to be involved in the killing of Shia leader Zakir Riaz Husain Monch in September 1998 in Jhang and of five persons at a mosque in Kot Addu, Muzaffargarh district, in September 1998. The arrested is said to be a member of the Lashkar high command. He is reported to have indicated that due to the rift in the Lashkar between the Riaz Basra and Qari Hayee factions, the new activists were disappointed and that the Qari Hayee group had been carrying on terrorist activities only to remain in the circuit of Sunni extremist outfits. The press release quoting him said "Riaz Basra believes in bloodshed even if Sunnis are killed in the attack as it happened in Sheikhupura a day before Eidul Azha".
