An operative of a terrorist module of the banned pro-Khalistan group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) suffered a bullet injury in his leg inside the Bal Gopal Gaushala in Balongi in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar District in Punjab amid a joint operation conducted by the Mohali Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) and the Batala police in the evening of January 4, reports Hindustan Times. The accused, identified as Sharanpreet Singh alias Sunny, a close associate of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)-backed terrorist Harvinder Rinda and United States (US)-based gangster Harpreet alias Happy Pasia, was arrested. Additionally, police recovered a pistol and two live cartridges from Sunny. Earlier, SATP reported that the Mohali CIA team had arrested two BKI operatives on January 3. As Sunny was wanted by Batala police, Mohali CIA and Batala police jointly interrogated his two accomplices named Karan Gujjarpuria and Vishaldeep Singh. During interrogation, it was revealed that Sunny used to work with Gujjarpuria and was hiding in Balongi following which patrolling teams launched a search and spotted him in Balongi around 5 pm. When chased, he ran into the gaushala and exchanged fire with the police. He was nabbed after being shot in the leg,” Sandeep Kumar Garg, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mohali, said.

On January 4, Police in Budgam District of Jammu and Kashmir dismantled a module comprising seven individuals from the Beerwah area, reports Daily Excelsior. A police spokesman said that these individuals were involved in the dissemination of anti-national propaganda by affixing posters in and around the Beerwah area. The arrested persons were identified as Romain Rasool Sheikh, Irfan Nazir Sheikh, Rizwan Nazir Sheikh and Sahil Javid Sheikh, all residents of Bonet Beerwah, Jahangir Bashir Mir, Tariq Ashraf Sheikh, both residents of Utligam Beerwah and Shakir Lateef Pathan, resident of Gandhipora and Beerwah. “The module was led by Romain Rasool Sheikh and Irfan Nazir Sheikh, who during investigation were found manipulated by a Lashkar-e-Toiba’s (LeT’s) Pakistani handler. It further emerged that the duo, acting as local motivators, instructed the other five individuals to carry out the assigned tasks. Incriminating evidence has been recovered from the apprehended persons. Investigation in the case is progressing,” spokesman added.

On January 11, a joint operation between Military Intelligence (ECIB), Security Forces (SFs) and the Longding Police resulted in the arrest of six hardcore cadres of National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) in Longding District of Arunachal Pradesh, reports India TodayNE. The arrested cadres, on interrogation, revealed information about a concealed cache of arms located between Knoknu and Khasa Villages. The Delhi Police Special Cell arrested Javed Mattoo, a wanted terrorist associated with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), in Delhi on January 4, reports Hindustan Times. Mattoo was held after a team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had launched a search operation for him. According to the Police, they seized a pistol, magazine, and a stolen vehicle from Mattoo. “With the coordination of Special Cell of Delhi Police and central agencies, Javed Mattoo, an A++ category terrorist who has a bounty of ₹10 lakh on him, was arrested today…After taking him into police custody remand, we will further action against him,” Special Commissioner of Delhi Police HGS Dhaliwal said. Mattoo, a resident of Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore District, was involved in five grenade attacks in the union territory. He was also responsible for the killing of five police personnel in different incidents. According to the police, Mattoo is one of the last surviving A++ designated terrorists from Jammu and Kashmir.

14 Armed Police Battalion (APBN) arrested Rohingya terrorist, identified as Syed Alam along with weapons at Camp No. 4 in Madhurchhara of Ukhiya sub-Distirct of Cox's Bazar District on January 4, reports Daily Bangladesh. A one-shooter gun and a shotgun cartridge were recovered at that time. Syed Alam is the son of Noor Hussain of Camp No. 4 of Ukhiya. Deputy Commander of 14 APBN, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Arefin Jewel said that Syed Alam was arrested for conducting a joint operation based on secret information. A case under Arms Act has been filed against him in this incident and handed over to Ukhiya Police Station. Besides, there are five more cases against him in Ukhiya Police Station.

On January 6, a 25-year-old school teacher, identified as Ramlal Nureti, was arrested from Karekatta village under Madanwada Police Station limits in Mohla-Manpur-Ambagarh Chowki District of Chhattisgarh for allegedly being a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) supporter, reports Devdiscourse. Angered by the arrest, a group of villagers, including schoolchildren, have launched a protest in front of Sitagaon Police Station, demanding his release. Ramlal was allegedly involved in putting up Maoist banners and posters in the area in September last year, the Police said. On September 15, 2023, the police recovered posters and banners from the Madanwada area, where Maoists appealed to observe the 19th anniversary of the outlawed movement, the Police added.

Five cadres of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), were arrested from the Tandwa Police Station area in Chatra District of Jharkhand on January 7, reports latestly.com. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Ranjan said a 'sub-zonal commander' identified as Adesh Kumar Ganjhu alias Prabhakar Ji, wanted in several cases of arson and extortion in the Tandwa coalfield area, was among the five arrestees. The other four were identified as Upendra Kumar Ganjhu alias Bhola, Laldev Kumar Ganjhu, Pintu Kumar Ganjhu and Rajesh Kumar Ganjhu. Arms and ammunition were also seized from them. Among these were a rifle, two pistols, 14 live cartridges, a knife, and pamphlets of the banned organisation, the SP said.

The encounter took place when a District Force (DF) team was on an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation after receiving inputs about the movement of ultras, Gariabandh Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Tukaram Kamble said, adding that on sensing the presence of Police at the site, the Naxalites opened fire and SFs retaliated. "The Naxalites fled into the core forest later. After the gunfight, a woman Naxalite was found injured at the site. She has been shifted to Gariabandh for treatment," he said. The arrested terrorists were wanted for serious crimes such as targeted killings and extortion against law enforcement agencies. The terrorists had been organized under the guise of religious students from Afghanistan to run the TTP network in Karachi. Furthermore, arrested terrorists were part of the TTP network from 2007 to 2014 and were involved in various attacks on security forces and NGOs in Swat and Malakand. These terrorists were also implicated in sectarian, ethnic, and politically motivated targeted killings in Karachi and attacks on law enforcement agencies. The network used to collect funds through extortion and abductions for ransom in Karachi for the top leadership of the TTP in Afghanistan.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kupwara, Yougal Manhas said that the module was busted following credible information about smuggling of arms and ammunition from two Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) handlers, originally hailing from Kupwara. The first one to be arrested in the case was Zahoor Ahmad Bhat of Rear Sudhpora Karnah, a village close to the LoC in Kupwara. “Acting on credible information from own sources and corroborated by other sister agencies and counterparts, Kupwara Police along with (Army’s) 9-PARA Field Regiment busted a terror module involved in smuggling of various arms and ammunition sent by two PoJK based LeT terrorist handlers Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh alias Shakoor of Gabra Karnah and Qazi Mohammad Khushal of Dhanni Karnah both at present operating from across the border, by arresting Zahoor Ahmad Bhat of Rear Sudhpora Karnah,” the SSP said. “An AK rifle, an AK magazine, 20 rounds of AK and two pistols with two magazines were recovered from him,” he added. He said preliminary investigations revealed that in the recent past the PoJK based handlers were in touch with Zahoor who hails from a village which is in proximity with LoC with various means. “The consignments dispatched to this side from across were thereafter delivered to other terror associates who were in contact with Zahoor and the said handlers as well,” Manhas said. He said that based on the further leads, four more militant associates Khursheed Ahmad Rather, Mudassir Shafiq and Ghulam Sarwar Rather, all residents of Gabra Karnah and Qazi Fazal Illahi were arrested. On February 10, National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested four persons, identified as Jameel Basha, Maulvi Hussain Faizy, Irshath and Syed Abdur Rahman Umari from Tamil Nadu in connection with Islamic State (IS) radicalisation and recruitment case, reports The Free Press Journal. The searches led to the seizure of a large number of electronic devices, material objects and documents. These included six laptops, 25 mobile phones, 34 SIM cards, six SD cards, three hard discs. Raids were conducted at 11 locations associated with Madras Arabic College / Kovai Arabic College in connection with the radicalisation case, which involved individuals engaged in clandestine radicalisation of gullible youth in the garb of Arabic language classes through preaching of radical ideologies and promotion of violent Jihad at their Regional Study Centres in Tamil Nadu. Besides the Arabic classes, the radicalisation took place online, through social media platforms and mobile applications, such as WhatsApp and Telegram. The IS operatives were using the classes and the social media to impart radical sermons to propagate Khilafat and IS ideologies inimical to India’s constitutionally established principles of secularism, democracy etc.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) Kerala on February 12, arrested a suspected master trainer of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), identified as Jafar Bheemantavida from his house in Kannur District of Kerala, reports abplive.com. Bheemantavida, was wanted in a case registered in 2022 related to a conspiracy by the proscribed organisation to establish Islamic rule in the country by 2047. Reportedly he is the 59th accused to be arrested in the case in which the NIA has so far charge-sheeted 60 persons. “He was suspected to be a PFI master trainer, engaged in imparting weapons training to PFI cadres to prepare them to operate as members of Service Team/ Hit squads of the organisation. Such a team or squad is mandated with the responsibility of carrying out targeted attacks and using force in execution of the orders of the PFI leadership,” the NIA spokesperson said.

Following the attack, an encounter took place between the Maoists and the Security Forces (SFs). In a search operation launched by the SFs, six Improvised Explosive Device (IED) bombs weighing five kilogrammes each were recovered. Bastar Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sunderraj P said, "New police camps are being set up in the core areas, resulting in Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] being in panic." Acting on a tip-off about Maoists returning in a tractor after celebrating Bhumkal Diwas in Peediya and Hallur, an operation was launched. After seeing Police, people riding a tractor near Matwada High School in the Jangla Police Station area jumped off the vehicle and tried to run away. However, the Police managed to arrest eight suspected Maoists, including three women. The arrested Maoists are said to be members of the Bhairamgarh Area Committee. They have been identified as Ramesh Kovasi (36), Sampath Oyam (32), Ando Vekko (21), Raju Vekko (19), Ranu Ursa (28), Rita Madkam (19), Pandey Oyam (30), and Sushila Kadati (26). Circle Inspector (CI) Karunakaran revealed that some suspected persons were caught and remanded to the court when they tried to run away. Rudresh, reports NIA. Nayazi was arrested by an NIA team at the Mumbai International Airport in Maharshtra on his arrival from Dar e Salaam, Tanzania. Rudresh, a prominent RSS leader of Shivajinagar, Bengaluru, was hacked to death by four cadres of PFI, on October 16, 2016. NIA investigations into the case revealed that the murder was part of a larger conspiracy hatched by Ghouse and another cadre identified as Asim Sheriff. A country-made double barrel rifle and four cartridges were recovered from him, he said. “Hassa was part of the Maoist squad led by Maharaj Pramanik, which ambushed a Police team under the Tiruldih Police Station area in Seraikela Kharsawan District in June 2019. On March 2, based in an intelligence-led operation, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a Popular Front of India (PFI) cadre identified as Abdul Saleem from Mydukur in Kadappa District of Andhra Pradesh, in the Nizamabad PFI case involving an anti-India conspiracy by the outfit to carry out acts of terror and violence, reports NIA. Abdul Saleem, the State Secretary for the PFI Telangana North, is the 15th accused to be arrested in the case, originally registered by the State Police at Nizamabad Police Station in July 2022 and taken over by the NIA in August 2022. An integral part of the conspiracy of the PFI and its cadres was to make India into an Islamic nation by2047, Abdul Saleem has been on the run since the case came to light and NIA had subsequently declared a reward of INR 2,000,00 for his arrest. NIA investigations in the case revealed that he was involved in radicalisation and recruitment of Muslim youth into the PFI and was also sending them to terror training camps for weapons training to equip them to further the organization’s anti-India agenda.

Woman Maoist Ram Bai was arrested from a forest near Jarpalli village under Pamed Police Station limits by the local Police, 204 battalion of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), and 151 battalion of CRPF, Bijapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Kumar Yadav said. "The team was out on an anti-Naxal operation in the Jarpalli and Aempur areas. Ram Bai is the president of the Maoist front organisation Kamlapur Krantikari Adivasi Mahila Sangathan (KAMS) and has a reward of Rs 1 lakh on her head. We seized the cooker bomb, detonating cord, and pamphlets related to the Maoists' tactical counter offensive campaign (TCOC) from her," the SP said. Five Maoists were arrested in a separate operation from Jangla, Yadav said. "Hadma Madkami, Ramesh Awalam alias Bojja, Kumaru Lekam alias Mahru, Maddaram Podiyam, and Bomda Kuhrami were apprehended from the forest of Kotrapal when a team of District Reserve Guard and local police were out on road opening and area domination activities," he said. Acting on a tip-off about the movement of insurgents for carrying out abduction and extortion in Sangsa village, the Assam Rifles launched an operation. As the insurgents were intercepted, they fired on the Assam Rifles troops and soon a gunfight broke out. In the gunfight, one insurgent was killed while another was apprehended, officials said. Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on March 9 claimed to have foiled several terror plots by arresting 23 suspected militants linked with different banned outfits during intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across the province, reports Dawn. According to a CTD spokesperson, the CTD conducted 229 IBOs in different Districts of the province to thwart incidents of terrorism, in which 228 suspects were picked and interrogated. Of them, 23 alleged terrorists were arrested with weapons, explosives and other prohibited materials. The suspects belonged to the banned outfits Al Qaeda, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Tehreek-e-Jafaria Pakistan (TJP) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The CTD spokesperson said these alleged terrorists were arrested in Rajanpur, Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Chiniot, Bahawalnagar, Faisalabad, Rahim Yar Khan, Lahore, Mianwali, Sheikhupura and Jhang Districts. He said that during the operations, 8,502 grams of explosive material, two hand grenades, one IED bomb, 20 detonators, 51 feet safety fuse wire, a 30-bore pistol with 10 bullets, 11 prohibited books, 170 pamphlets, 61 stickers of banned organisation, 34 receipt books, two mobile phones and PKR 127,770 cash were recovered from the suspects.

Two terrorists were arrested from Lahore for extending financial aid to al Qaida while another notorious terrorist of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) who got training from Afghanistan was arrested in Bahawalpur. Some of the nabbed terrorists were identified as Shehzad, Muddasir, Fazal Maula, Azam, Rehman, Shafique, Zeeshan and others. The CTD spokesman said that explosives, 27 detonators, 60 feet safety fuse wire, three IED bomb, weapons, ammunition and cash were recovered from possession of the detainees who were planning to attack different organizations and Government offices. During the ongoing week, 43,792 people were investigated and 149 suspects were arrested in 1081 combing operations, the spokesman added.

The identities of the arrested Maoists are yet to be ascertained. Nine Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as Madvi Ayata alias Sukhram, a Maoist ‘central regional commander’ who carried a bounty of INR 800,000, Kalmu Deve, Sodhi Ayata, Madkam Bhima and five others were arrested from the forests of Palodi village in Kistaram in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on April 8, reports The Times of India. Deve, who carried a bounty of INR 200,000, was a ‘divisional committee member (DCM)’ of ‘south Bastar division’. Sodhi had a reward of INR 100,000 for her arrest and was Palchama Revolutionary People’s Council (RPC) ‘militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists) ‘commander’. Bhima is Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangh (DKAKMS) ‘president’. The other five are low rung cadres, Police said. Earlier SATP had reported that during a joint operation, Police personnel and CRPF’s CoBRA troopers busted a CPI-Maoist den and arrested six hardcore CPI-Maoist cadres in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on April 8, reports odishabhaskar.in. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested an armed cadre of the People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), following raids at two locations each in Jharkhand and Assam on April 10, reports The Print. The crackdown led to the arrest of one Binod Munda alias Sukkhwa from the Khunti District of Jharkhand, according to the statement issued by the NIA. The accused is wanted in four PLFI cases in Jharkhand and has been arrested in a case relating to revival attempts by the PLFI. As part of the revival activities, PLFI members and cadres were involved in generating funds through extortion from various coal traders, transporters, railway contractors, and businessmen in Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, as per the NIA investigations. The NIA teams also seized a host of incriminating material, including PLFI-related documents, along with two walkie-talkies, five mobile phones, SIM cards and INR 11,000 cash during the searches.

Banjam Pojja was the ‘chairman’ of the ‘Padiyaro family committee’ under the Kistaram regional committee of the outlawed organisation. While Kalmu Ganga was the ‘deputy militia commander’ of the Maoists, the others were lower-level cadres.
