A lower rung Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Ayata Madkam (30), was arrested by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) from the forests of Nilvaya village in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on January 1, reports The Pioneer. Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Siddharth Tiwari, said Madkam was a Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (DAKMS) member of Nilvaya Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) of the outlawed Maoist outfit, and was involved in several Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] incidents last year.

Five Pistols, 10 Pistol Magazines, 77 Pistol rounds, one pistol cleaning rod, one Pistol User Manual guide, four hand Grenades and 10 packets of Heroin like narcotics substance weighing 9.450 Kgs was recovered from Garangnard Chatkadi in Kupwara District in J&K on disclosure of the arrested accused. The consignment was meant for The Resistance Front (TRF). An FIR under number 01/2023 u/s 7/25 Arms Act (AA), 5 Explosive Substances Act (ESA) 8/21-29 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, Act (NDPS)13,18, 20, 23 & 38 Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) stands registered.

On January1, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested six Al-Qaeda terrorists, identified as Abdur Rob, Mohammad Shakib, Mohammad Shamim Hossain, Mohammad Nadeem Sheikh, Mahammad Abshar, and Mohammad Sayeed Uddin, reports The Daily Star. So far according to information, they were arrested from Syedabad Bus Terminal of Dhaka city, Chattogram District and Teknaf Sub-District of Cox’s Bazar District. Dhaka court placed the arrested militants on a five-day remand on January 2. CTTC Additional Commissioner Mohammad Asaduzzaman said the arrestees formed a team by communicating on social media and different apps. "They migrated to Teknaf and stayed there for militant activities, after training with local collaborators. They have more associates. An operation is underway to arrest them," Asaduzzaman stated.

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) 32nd Battalion arrested a wanted Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre identified as Janaki Koda, during a search operation conducted on the secret information about the presence of Maoists in New Barmasia and Bankura of Kajra Police Station area in Lakhisarai District of Bihar on January 3, reports prabhatkhabar.com. Koda is accused of shooting and killing Chhotu Saav, the driver of Ganesh Rajak, the then head of Bhalui Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) on August 19, 2019, and a case has been registered regarding this in Chanan Police Station. Apart from this, a case has been registered against him in Piribazar Police Station. He is accused of planting Improvised Explosive Device (IED) bombs and firing on the Police force. Koda has been sent to judicial custody.

Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including two brothers, were arrested from Pannk Narayanpur Police Station limits of Bokaro District of Jharkhand on January 3, reports The Pioneer. About a dozen cases have been registered against them in Pannk-Narayanpur Police Station of Nawadih Block (administrative division) of the district, said Police. Acting on a tip off that two Maoists, Baburam Marandi and Dalo Ram Marandi belonging to Giridih District and another Maoist Futani alias Kuleshwar Kumar Sharma alias Koleshwar Thakur, a resident of Giridih, were arrested while they arrived at place in Nawadih under Pannk-Narayanpur Police Station. The arrested rebels were charged in case number 161/2014 Section-147/148/149/353/307 Bhadvi and 4/5 Explosive Substances Act and 17 Criminal Law Amendment (CLA) Act's First Information Report (FIR) has been registered on December 12, 2014. The Maoists were also accused of planting a bomb in a culvert on the Palamu-Sarubera Road in Nawadih with the intention of killing him.

The case relates to a conspiracy hatched by the accused to further the terror activities of the IS and to endanger the unity, security and sovereignty of the country. The investigation revealed that Reshaan was radicalised by Maaz Muneer, another accused arrested earlier on September 20. The arrested duo received funds from their IS handler through Crypto-wallets for furthering the terrorist activities of the Islamic State. It was also revealed that as part of their larger designs, the accused also indulged in arson and targeting of vehicles and other establishments, such as liquor shops, godowns, transformers etc. Digital devices and incriminating documents were seized from the houses of the accused and the suspects during the search operation.

The arrested militants identified as Santosh Ram from Simaria, Shiv Shankar Bharti from Tandwa, Nandlal Bharti from Simaria and Mohammad Noman from Badhar, are residents of Rajpur Police Station area, were trying to collect ‘levy’ (extortion money) by spreading terror in Koyalanchal area in Chatra and Hazaribagh District. A few days ago, the arrested cadres had demanded a ‘levy’ of INR 10 million over the phone from the LNT company operating in Hazaribagh, and the company officials were warned of dire consequences for not paying the ‘levy’. Apart from this, an attempt was also made by these extremists to spread terror by pasting posters of extremist organization TSPC in other areas including Tandwa and Simaria of Chatra and Keredari Police Station area of Hazaribagh District. Superintendent of Police (SP) Rakesh Ranjan had formed a special team launched a special campaign against the militants and arrested them red-handed while pasting the poster of the organization. Chanti, son of Manju Khillo from Kadaguma village under Chitrakonda Police limits of the District, was suspectedly involved in 2012 Border Security Force (BSF) Commandant JR Kashwan death case. In 2012, NIA had registered a case (No-RC-02/2012/NIA/DLI arising out of Chitrakonda PS case (No-07/2012, dated 10.02.2012 regarding Maoist attack on the BSF officers killing at least four. Earlier, South Asia terrorism Portal (SATP) had reported the Maoist attack on February 10, 2012, in which four personnel of the BSF including a Commandant were killed in an ambush by the cadres of the CPI-Maoist in Malkangiri District. It is pertinent to mention, Chanti was arrested by Police in 2013, and was released on bail in 2018. But he was absconding since then and did not appear before the court in connection with different cases. The NIA had registered a case against him and had launched a manhunt to arrest him, adds Odisha Bytes. A reward of INR 300,000 on Chanti was announced and his posters put up at different places in the district. Both were members of Mainpur Nuapada Division of the CPI-Maoist. DIG, Pandit said the duo was involved in many cases of violence in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi and neighbouring Chhattisgarh. Anita had joined the Maoist fold in 2010 and was working as a party member of Bodchatia Local Organisation Squad (LOS) before joining the Mainpur-Nuapada Division. She was influenced by Bal Sanghatan under Ungi. She was promoted as ‘area committee member (ACM)’ in 2020 and has been active since 2013. Bagh had joined the Maoists in 2017 and has been active from then as a 'militia' (people's army of the Maoists) member of the Mainpur-Nuapada Division. He provided information and other inputs to the ultras. Bagh was also providing medicines and other essential articles to the rebels, Police said.

Under Zakir's guidance, he received training on different types of firearms at Shamshad hill of Kandahar, Afghanistan. In 1998, he returned to Pakistan, got an Indian visa from there, and returned to Bangladesh through India. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on February 6, arrested one more person identified as Irshad alias Belal from Jitaura village in Motihari in East Champaran District of Bihar, reports India Today. The suspect was arrested for his active involvement in the Popular Front of India (PFI)’s criminal conspiracy to spread communal hatred. As per the agency, Irshad had attended training classes held under the garb of physical education at Ahmad Palace, Phulwari Sharif and Patna. He was also associated with the PFI’s training centres and activities. A printed PFI banner and two iron swords have been recovered from a hideout in the village of Parsauni in Muzaffarpur District. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) had reported the arrest incident, the NIA, on February 4, had arrested three suspected activists of the PFI in Motihari in connection with the case. The arrests were made after the NIA carried out raids on eight locations based on a suspected terror module that was hatched by the PFI.

Following a tip that some goods had been brought to be provided to the Maoists in Dhamtari and Gariabandh districts, a search operation was launched. Gariabandh, Superintendent of Police (SP) identified the four as Tamradhwaj Sahu alias Rinku, his father Shivkumar Sahu, Rakesh Kashyap and Ishwarlal Netam, all from Dhamtari District. The Police also seized 12 walkie-talkies, Naxalite uniforms and other items from them. The arrestees admitted that they work for Naxalites, attend their meetings, spread Maoist ideology in rural areas, extort money from traders and contractors, and hand it over to the Maoists. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on February 8 arrested a Daesh ‘commander’ during a raid in Korangi Industrial area of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports ARY News. According to the CTD officials, the arrested ‘commander’ was identified as Abdul Malik. A pistol along with rounds was seized from their possession, the CTD officials added. The initial investigation of CTD revealed that Abdul Malik is associated with Daesh’s Mula Abdul Manan group since 2011. The arrestee is an Afghan national, who is residing in Karachi for a long time. The NIA stated in its FIR that Zahed has been accused of being involved in other terror-related cases in Hyderabad. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) couple, identified as Madhukar Chinanna Kodape alias Thuge (42), and his wife, Jamani Mangalu Punam alias Shamala (35), who were allegedly involved in several violent incidents, both carrying a total reward of INR 1 million, were arrested by the Gadchiroli Police from Hyderabad District of Telangana on February 20, reports Telangana Today. The Maoist couple, who have been staying in Gachibowli in Hyderabad for last few years, had reportedly left the CPI-Maoist movement in 2006 and since then been evading arrest. The Police found that Madhukar was working as a watchman in a local security company in the city while Shamala was working in the housekeeping department of a car showroom. The duo had concealed their real identities and attended the work regularly. Madhukar worked in various positions in the CPI-Maoist party and allegedly was involved in 25 serious offences registered against him at various Police Stations in Gadchiroli district, while, Shamala is involved in nine serious offences including a murder. The Gadchiroli Police were on lookout for them for last one year, and on reliable information, a Police team of Gadchiroli Police arrested them from Hyderabad.

The Police also seized detonators and other material left behind by the Maoists. Chintoor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), P.K.V. Maheswara Reddy, said in a release that Dalam member Gali Narayana Reddy of Sri Satya Sai District and a 16-year-old boy were arrested in the raid. Narayana Reddy was involved in five major cases, including the torching of a private bus at Sarivela in Chintoor agency in 2022. Narayana Reddy was also involved in the killing of two tribal men — a Chintoor-based person in January 2023 and another person in 2021 — on the suspicion that they were ‘police informers’. “In November 2020, Narayana Reddy got in touch with the Maoists through a social networking platform and was encouraged to join the party by Maoist leader Koyyada Sumbaiah of Munuguru. He has since been active in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Chhattisgarh,” said the ASP.

Since October 2022 he has been working as the Sabari LOS ‘commander’ and carries a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) weapon. He was involved in the abduction and murder of Kurnapalli deputy Sarpanch (head of the Panchayat, village level local self-Government institution) in Cherla Mandal in August 2022. He was also involved in the murder of Mandal Parishad Territorial Candidate (MPTC) member N Srinivas in July 2019, killing of 17 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnels in an ambush under Chintaguppa Police Station limits in March 2020 and killing of 24 CRPF personnels at Tekulagudem under Tarrem Police Station limits in Chhattisgarh State in April 2021. During interrogation Sandeep confessed to Police that he tried to surrender to Police many times but the Maoist leaders forced him to commit crimes. One Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorist was killed while five others were arrested in an exchange of fire during an operation conducted by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in the Tela Band area of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on February 22, reports Geo TV. The CTD statement said that the slain terrorists belong to the TTP and were involved in over 20 extortion cases. The militants were involved in grenade attacks and firing incidents, said the CTD. "The detained terrorists had demanded Rs5 million from a citizen named Imtiaz and upon his refusal, the terrorist attacked the victim's house with a grenade and by shooting at it," it statement added. According to Police sources, it emerged during investigation that Kamal was associated with PFI member Badruddin, who, along with aide Firoz Khan, was arrested in Lucknow in 2021. Kamal, who is believed to be handling the “hit squad” of the movement and is among the top officer bearers of the PFI and worked as office secretary at its Delhi headquarters too. According to an STF officer, Kamal's is the ninth arrest in connection with the case lodged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups), 295A (deliberate act to outrage religious feelings), 120B (criminal conspiracy), the IT Act and under provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineeth G in a statement informed that the arrested Maoists had come to Paidigudem forests to plant landmines to target the Police. 10 gelatin sticks, four electric detonators, 20 metre cordex wire, 50 metre electric wire, a battery and a steel bucket were seized from them. Moreover, Maoists were forcing minors to join the party and they were coming to Telangana in the guise of labourers and living on border areas.
