On the hit list of the terrorists were four other prominent personalities of Punjab, the police said. Four pistols and 124 live cartridges were allegedly seized from their possession. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, the Joint Commissioner (Special Cell) of Police, Karnal Singh, said the terrorists - Baljeet Singh, Bikkar Singh, Kulwinderjeet Singh and Tirlochan Singh - had carried out a dry run and were planning to assassinate the religious leader on January 5. “The four monitored the security arrangements for the religious leader and planned to smuggle in weapons in a milk container,” said Karnal Singh, who, citing security reasons, refused to disclose the other targets. The police reportedly arrested Baljeet and Bikkar at Patiala and Sangrur in Punjab over the weekend. Kulwinderjeet and Tirlochan were arrested in Ludhiana and Panchkula in Haryana two days later.

The Tamil Nadu Police arrested on January 16-night Nathan alias Suruli alias Thambithurai Parameswaran, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) Tamil Nadu intelligence unit chief, from a hideout at Madipakkam, reports New Indian Express. The police also arrested seven other Sri Lankan nationals, who worked under him as helpers to collect information about anti-LTTE leaders like Varadaraja Perumal and Douglas Devananda, besides posing as traders to buy items like spare parts for two-wheelers and boats to be sent back to Sri Lanka. According to police sources, Suruli, a resident of Jaffna in Sri Lanka, embarked on a Tamil Nadu mission a year ago after his leader Sanjeevi Master ordered him to increase intelligence inputs from the State. He, along with the others in Tamil Nadu, had made several ‘business’ trips to Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) and Rameswaram to send a variety of goods and raw materials, including steel balls, to the LTTE. Security forces on February 11 captured Taliban commander Mullah Mansoor Dadullah along with five other Taliban militants after a gun-battle in the Gowal Ismailzai village of Qila Saifullah district (near the Afghan border) in Balochistan, according to Dawn. He is the younger brother of Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah, who was killed in a clash with the US-led forces in Afghanistan’s Helmand province in May 2007. "Mansoor Dadullah is alive, but he is injured and in the custody of the authorities along with five other Taliban who too have received injuries," caretaker Interior Minister Lt-Gen (retd) Hamid Nawaz said. A senior military official told AP that Dadullah died of his wounds on the way to hospital, but army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas denied the claim, Daily Times reported. Lieutenant Colonel David Accetta, the top US military spokesman in Afghanistan, said he could not confirm the report. Mullah Mansoor succeeded his brother as commander, but was removed from the post, and subsequently from the Taliban movement itself, after some time following differences with Mullah Omar. He was later arrested by the Afghan government, but released in a swap when Taliban abducted 30 people, including an Italian journalist.

The Karachi Police arrested 10 members of a militant organisation linked to the Taliban who were planning massive terrorist attacks in the city during the elections, a senior police official said on February 15, according to Dawn. Addressing a press conference, the Inspector General of Police Azhar Ali Farooqi said the militant outfit, Tehrik-i-Islami Lashkar-i-Muhammadi, had ties with Mullah Dadullah, Taliban commander Tahir and Sirajul Haq Haqqani. A large quantity of explosives was seized from their possession. He said the group was planning attacks on political and religious leaders and philanthropists, adding that it had also obtained lists of members of the Rotary and Lions clubs and Theosophical Society. "They had plans to sabotage the election process. The city and the province as a whole have been saved from a major disaster," Farooqi said. According to a press release issued by the Sindh Police, a warning letter by the group addressed to military institutions, intelligence agencies and police read: "You people have become part of the conspiracies hatched by the infidels. You have lost the difference between friends and foes and you are fighting against your fellow countrymen and the Mujahideen. Now you have two options before you - become protectors of Islam and the country and turn against those who order you to act against the fellow countrymen." Farooqi disclosed that the arrested men were formerly members of other banned outfits, like the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), but after the Lal Masjid operation they formed a group of their own because their former organisations had ‘deviated’ from their mission.
