At least 25 persons, including six Policemen, were injured in Pulwama town (Pulwama District) after fresh clashes broke out between protesters and Security Forces (SFs) soon after curfew was lifted from the township in the morning of January 1, reports Daily Excelsior. Police later arrested eight people from the township on charges of stone throwing. As reported earlier, the curfew in the township was imposed on Friday (December 28) after seven protesters were injured in SFs’ firing in village Chandigam and Pulwama town. SFs had claimed that the protesters had blocked the way for SF vehicles in which four security personnel injured in the Chandipora (Pulwama) encounter (December 28), in which two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were shot dead by SFs, were being removed to hospital for treatment.

Security Forces (SFs) busted a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp and arrested two Maoists following a gun battle with them in the forest area of Palarmeta in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on January 1, reports The Times of India. The arrested Maoists were identified as Som Sai Usendi (33) and Lakhmu Netam (31). Some other Maoists managed to escape. A 12-bore gun, one air gun and other Maoism related material were recovered from the camping site. On interrogation, the arrested Maoists said the 'commander' of East Bastar Divisional Committee - Kamlesh - was also among the Maoists who fled the camp.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Dera Ismail Khan, Qazi Jamilur Rahman told reporters that four persons associated with the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were arrested and suicide jackets, detonators and explosives and ammunition recovered from their hideouts. Nine people were killed and 26 others wounded in a blast in Thoya Fazil on the ninth of Muharram. The next day another bomb went off in Commissionary Bazaar killing seven people and injuring over 138 others.

FICN worth INR 500, 000 was also seized from him. He was handed over to Police by the Border Security Force (BSF) on January 5. Police intelligence officials in Agartala (Tripura) on January 4 said Ranjit was arrested from a posh location in Dhaka on December 30 and Biswamohan on December 23 last from nearby areas. Both the militant leaders were arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The RAB members, after receiving specific information, surrounded the flats in Dhaka and arrested the militant leaders, a source said. According to reports, they have been living in Dhaka for the past two decades. Mumbai Police arrested two persons, identified as Farooq Naiku and Mohammed Talukdar, suspected to be linked with Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) from a guest house at Masjid Bunder in Mumbai (Greater Bombay District) along with Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) worth INR 27, 200 on January 16, reports Indian Express. They were produced before a local court the next day and remanded in Police custody till January 23, 2013. During interrogation of the accused, it was revealed that Farooq was an active HM militant and he along with Mohammed were actively involved in FICN circulation, narcotics trade, hawala (illegal money transfer) and terror activities. They had also carried out recce of various vital installations across the country. Farooq has been to Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) via Wagah border in Amritsar (Punjab) on several occasions since 2001 form training. Officially, he has crossed the Indo-Pak border three times. Farooq had been reporting to a HM "commander" in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and also took part in the agitation over the Amarnath land transfer controversy in the state in the year 2008, Police added. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said, "We have evidence that he has photographed Uri Dam, Uri power project, Baramulla Bridge and graves of terrorists killed during operations by security forces… He had even attempted to infiltrate into the Indian Army”. Farooq has been tasked with gathering information related to Indian troops' movements in J&K, public protests and other developments. He passed on the information either through telephonic conversations, mails or by crossing the border, to his Pakistani handlers and intelligence agencies. The second accused Talukdar, who hails from Assam, is also suspected to be an active member of the terror outfit and had been helping Farooq in FICN operations. "We are ascertaining Talukdar role in detail," Roy said, adding Police were trying to find out if the accused had played any role in violence in Azad Maidan (Mumbai) on August 11, 2012.

According to sources, four persons including the HM militant had flown from Karachi (Pakistan) to Kathmandu (Nepal) reportedly on fake passports and visas arranged by some couriers. From Nepal, they sneaked into Gorakhpur District in Uttar Pradesh (India), where the three SPOs and others received them. The three SPOs escorting them have been identified as Zahangir Beg, Mehboob Bhat and Shamas Din Beg. Remaining three persons detained included Ghulam Nabi Mir, Gulzar Ahmad and the Tavera driver Tazamul. Two suspected Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants arrested earlier on January 16, from Mumbai (Maharashtra) were charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), on January 23, reports Zee News. An investigating officer said, "Though we have the names of Pakistani intelligence officers whom Farooq met, it is not appropriate to disclose the details at this stage." Further, Hindustan Times revealed that Crime branch sources said Farooq recruited more than six youngsters, who are now engaged in espionage. Naiku himself used to do spy work before he fled the Valley in 2008. The young boys, sources said, were in regular touch with Naiku through Internet and fed regular updates and photos of troop movement and other counter-insurgency operations (including encounters) in four Districts of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K)- Poonch, Baramula, Rajouri and Uri that the terror group has focused on. The name of a former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) from Mumbai cropped up during the investigation, reports The Asian Age. During a press conference, Commandant Mohmand Rifles, Colonel Mushtaq Ahmad said a joint operation was conducted by Levies, Khasadars and Mohmand Rifles in Shani Khel. The raid was conducted at the house of Ijaz the alleged mastermind of suicide attack in Yakaghund on January 31. Security officials then arrested Dr Ibrahim, on the information provided by Ijaz on February 3. During the raid, officials also arrested Sameer, another relative of Ijaz. Colonel Ahmed revealed that the house was being used as a terrorist hideout, where a cache of arms, ammunitions and explosives were recovered from the basement and the courtyard. The raiding team recovered weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), suicide jackets, RPG-7 shells, mortar shell, missiles, anti-tank mines and various weapons. The raiding team also recovered a large quantity of arms and ammunitions from nearby farms owned by Ijaz.

According to the Police, the arrested criminals were part of the gang, which abducted a Guwahati city based businessman, Rajib Sharma when he had gone to Byrnihat in Meghalaya on February 1. Later, the family of the businessman received a call on January 3 by suspected National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) militants asking for a ransom of INR 10 million for the trader’s release. A resident of Purnea District (Bihar), Farooq later moved to another district in the State, Darbhanga. The NIA sought his remand for 10 days. Meanwhile, the NIA has claimed to have learned through the investigations that the executioners of July 13, 2011 (13/7) Mumbai (Maharashtra) blasts and the August 1, 2012, Pune (Maharashtra) explosions had stayed in a small village in Bihar's Darbhanga District for a year prior to the incident, reports The Times of India. Two persons, posing as militants, were arrested on February 6, in Dooru area of Anantnag District for issuing threats to the people in the area, reports Daily Excelsior. Police identified them as Mohammad Yousuf Khan, son of Mohammad Shafi Khan and Abdul Rashid Rai, son of Gulam Mohd Rai of the same District. The arrestees were posing as Harkat-ul-Jehadi-Islami (HuJI) militants and were threatening members of the Gram Panchayat (village level local self government institution). Two other accused a Mongolian identified as Tamir and a Sri Lankan national Hassim are reportedly absconding. Inspector General of Police (IGP-Indore) Anuradha Shankar said, "This is one of the rarest of rare cyber crime cases and probably this is the first time when a district-level police has cracked such a case." Accused siphoned money from nine accounts of Punjab National Bank (PNB) of the Hindi news daily and transferred it to CC-Avenue (a gaming website based in China) from there the money was transferred to mol.com and redeemed in Shanghai (China). A share of money was transferred to a bank account in New Delhi from which Varun withdrew his share.

Dandapani Mohanty, who acted as an interlocutor between the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and the State Government during the high profile abductions of the then Malkangiri collector R Vineel Krishna in 2011 and Italians Paulo Bosusco and Claudio Colangelo in 2012, was arrested by Police from his residence at Shanti Nagar in Berhampur in Ganjam District on February 8 on charges of being involved in extremist activities, reports The Times of India. "Mohanty was a logistics provider to Maoists," Director General of Police (DGP) Prakash Mishra told The Times of India hours after police took the convener of Jana Adhikar Manch (JAM) in custody. It may be mentioned that, in 2006, the state Government had outlawed Daman Pratirodh Manch headed by Mohanty on grounds that it was serving as a front organization of the CPI-Maoist. Justifying Mohanty's arrest, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (southern range) Amitabh Thakur said, "He was involved in at least 15 Maoist-related cases in Gajapati district. Of these, non-bailable warrants were pending against him in six cases."

The trio was later identified as Manowar Mullick alias Billu, Mainuddin Mullick alias Bala and Alauddin Ali alias Ala Baba. Though Billu and Bala are siblings from Bhatora gram panchayat (village level local self-government institution) area in Howrah, STF officers claimed that the trio was running their trade from the heart of the city. The trio was produced in a court on February 10. They have been remanded in Police custody for further investigation.

Security Forces (SFs) arrested two Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants including the ‘deputy area commander’ of West Garo Hills and recovered arms and ammunition on February 9 after an operation in West Garo Hills District, reports The Shillong Times. According to police, the deputy area commander of GNLA, Brightwell Arengh alias Chiga (29), and Napsen ch Marak (30) were arrested while the area commander escaped after a brief exchange of fire between the militants and the SFs at Chigitchakgre area at around 11:45 pm. Police recovered one AK-47 rifle, 55 rounds of live ammunition and communication equipments among others from the hide out of the militants.
