Sources from the ATS said that MEA officials spoke to Tambe on the telephone on “encrypted channels”. “We traced Tabrez through sources and later made MEA officers talk to him two weeks ago on encrypted channels,” said an ATS source. After contacting Tambe, the ATS shared the contact details with the MEA. Sources from the MEA were tightlipped about the exact details of the encrypted conversations with Tambe as the process is still underway. The MEA has begun approaching the various power centres in Libya to facilitate Tambe’s return. He is allegedly under the custody of Libyan authorities.

The Hindu adds that Nazim Ahmed, spent around four years in the Middle East and his radicalisation is suspected to have occurred during this time, sources in the Maharashtra ATS said on April 27. “Investigations have revealed that Ahmed worked as a plumber in Dammam in Saudi Arabia for two years before coming back to India in 2014. In 2015, he went to Saudi Arabia again and secured employment in Mecca. During these stints in Saudi Arabia, he started viewing videos about jihad (holy war) and similar topics and participated in discussion forums about these subjects,” said a Maharastra ATS officer
