Maoist 'supreme leader' Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda has expressed "readiness of his party for negotiations at the presence and assistance of the United Nations." He also reiterated that the longstanding demands of the Maoists for a roundtable conference, an interim government and the election of a constituent assembly were still intact and those were the minimum pre-requisites for establishing people’s sovereignty. Also he indicted the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) for its participation in the Deuba Government and said that the Common Minimum Programme unveiled by the four-parties on June 30, ‘would not lead to any solution’. Earlier, the UN Resident Co-ordinator in Nepal, Matthew Kahane expressed the world body’s willingness to mediate the peace process, ‘if the government invites’ and said that UN would not interfere in the negotiations between the Government and Maoists. However, he clarified that a UN-based mediation exercise would not mean that the UN recognises the Maoists.

The Islamist Army of Ansar al-Sunna is reported to have killed the twelve Nepalese who they had taken hostage in Iraq on August 20, international news agencies said citing information posted by the terrorist group on an Islamic website. "The statement by the Al-Qaeda linked group was accompanied by pictures of what was claimed to be the bodies of the hostages, one of whom was apparently beheaded while the rest had their throats cut," reported the AFP. The Nepalese Ambassador to Qatar, Shayamananda Suman, said "I have confirmed the news through al-Zajeera TV and it is already in the website of the militant group." Describing the incident as unfortunate, Suman said, "The problem was that there was no communication from the other side. Nepalese officials had put a lot of efforts and had contacted Iraqi religious leaders to help release the hostages." Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Prakash Saran Mahat, said the killing has shocked the Government. "We have reports about the killing of 12 Nepali hostages. This is completely shocking," Mahat said during an evening news bulletin of the state-owned Nepal Television. According to the minister, "We channeled our diplomatic missions in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and the government made several appeals through various channels."
